turn signals blinking double time
Both turn signals on the SC blinks at 2X normal speed. Does anyone know where the turn signal relay in a '79 is located? Can't seem to find it in the service manual. Thanks.

My 79 had the same problem. Tyson at TRE replaced the relay and showed me where it was. I believe it was behind the gas/oil level gauge.

Have you checked to make sure you don't have a bulb burnt out or unseated?
|
Another possibility is the connector near the switch-mine was loosened the last time I did work in the area, resulting in a similar problem.

sounds like a burned out or unseated bulb to me.
|
Yep, many times simply removing the bulb and cleaning the contacts (on the bulb and the socket) will cure this problem.

Thanks everybody. I thought about bulbs but this is happening with both left and right turn signals. Kinda weird to have two bulbs out. Also, the lights work, they just blink fast so probably not unseated, I wouldn't think.

Sounds like the relay to me, since all bulbs work.
Open the trunk, remove the shield that covers the heater hoses etc... this is easy and it creates some more room. The relay is a black box on the left side of the car, just behind the dash gauges (as someone pointed out behind the gas/oil gauge). There were two relays there in my car... it was the one the closest to the front of the car. It can just be removed by pulling up out of the socket. If it sticks, carefully get a screwdriver underneath and twist it out. It is a "Hella" part and it is clearly printed on the top of the relay. Mine was sticky and I had to remove some hoses to get both hands in there and a screwdriver to get it out. Here's my post: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/223615-indicators-living-their-own-life.html Good luck! PS. Mine was a non-brake booster car... this might interfere with getting it out the way I described. I'm not sure how much room there is on the brake booster cars. |
Have you tried a new Turn Signal relay or "Electronic Extended Life Flasher". Model No : EL 13 , you will find it at Kroger Auto Store for $10.00 bucks. That may help.

Make sure you check all the bulbs, not just the turn signal bulbs. I have a rear reverse bulb that 'loses contact' every six months or so and will start just that side off double time. Need to get some bulb grease

I replaced the flasher/hazard relay and that took care of the problem. Troubleshooting this was way easier than the actual part replacement.
I couldn't get the oil guage off easy enough, plus I didn't want to mess up the dash so I decided to get at it from the hood. I had to remove the locking clip off the top of the left strut and move the left strut out of the way so I could stick a hand into the small access area. Then, I had to pull off the relay plug out of the hole it was attached to because the relay wouldn't come off the plug. After replacing the relay, I found it impossible to re-install the relay plug into that small hole (the plug has a rubber nipple that fits inside the hole). So, I just wrapped up the relay and plug with electrical tape and stuffed it where the sun won't shine. Pain in the ass really for such a simple problem. |
