is it just me , or is that cage a bit cosmetic
i mean , using a tube with a bend in it , isn't really a good thing for strenth is it ? if that car ever rolls, i would think the cage will give just bend more right where there allready is a bend in the tube... though 17K isn't much for a Boxter

how does that work with FIA certification ? is that accepted?
i remember the old cage in my dad's Alfa , he did Rallye's with it (national champ group N long long time ago) , not a single bend, just triangluar connections ... he never flipped it , but i'm sure if he would have , that thing wouldn't ave budged a bit...

Link doesn't work but it goes to show what burning alot of money turning a car into a track car only goes to devalue it.

I know the shop that did the work. ISC racing in Winter Haven Florida. They are a well respected race shop, very well known in the SE SCCA, especially for mazda rotary engine work. They take care of my 2 race miatas. Their cages are well designed.
The story behind the car is they were the mechanics for a new race group- ERL racing I believe was the name. Executive Racing League. The thought was that high end executives would enjoy their own elite race group. The group purchased a boxster, 300 series BMW, the small Jaguar, Mercedes, and a small 2door Cadallac. These were brand new cars off the dealer lot. They first race car gutted the 5 cars, beautiful leather interiors were lying everywhere. Full cages were then designed and installed- each cage took time as it was the first one. Then the hard work started. They didn't want to have a different inventory of wheels and tires for each car, so hub adapters were designed so each car would use the same wheel. A great deal of work was done with the computers- trying to turn off all the stablity controls is much easier said than done. Then they were tested multiple times at the track and changes made to somewhat equalize the cars. The hardest part was these cars were new models so very little was available off the shelf. Even performance brake pads were non existant, especially for the Jag. There was a lot of man hours in these cars. The ERL never materialized, the cars were wholesaled as a group. They ran well, but would not be competitive in any class in their exisitng condition. The boxster was clearily the handling favorite, especially after suspension upgrades. I know I learned a lot watching them work on these, luckily the shop got paid for its work before ERL went away. |

I can ask, I thought all the cars were purchased new, but I never asked about each one. I guess the boxster was used before the conversion- it sure looked new before they started prepping it. Again, this will be a great DE/ track car but it didn't look like it would be easy to class, at least not in scca.

I remember those guys. Ran into them at sebring a couple of years ago. They wanted like $50k for a season of racing. Great idea, terrible execution. Why spend all that money on jaguars and mercedes? Buy a bunch of late 80's 911s...
jeesh. -dc |
