dumb(ish) comparo question
 

I'm gonna get my first Porsche. I think I want a 964 C4 (have had AWD cars since my Quattro coupe, 20 years ago), as I live in the Frozen North.

BUT: I see relatively few 964s on the used market, and often see G-50-equipped '87-'89 911s with lowish mileage for higher prices. This leads me to infer that the market is saying that they might well be more reliable cars than even re-sealed 964s and, therefore, more valuable.

Any opinions on the validity of this inference? Useful advice for an olde fahrt looking to give himself a retirement present? All gratefully received.

Basically, the 964s have a bad rap - image thing going on. MANY have had them and loved them. They can be a good bargain because of this. As always, do your homework, get a PPI and then enjoy!

If I lived in a winter climate I would have a 964 c4 as a daily driver. The early AWD systems were abit more cumbersome than the 993 version but they are still great cars and can be great bargains. Do your homework and get it inspected for all the updates including clutch, distributor vents, cylinder sealing, etc. Good luck!

To expand a bit on Jamie's comments: the first AWD 964s were more of an all-weather solution than an advanced handling solution- in fact the AWD 964s I have seen were NO fun on a tight handling course at all. It seems that the system was overcontrolling, almost turning into FWD under hard cornering.
So do some test drives..then you decide..:)
