The current price for the Beck 904 rolling chassis (turnkey without engine/tranny) is $50K Built the way Beck does it.
However add your engine/trans, your personal touches, your preffered mods and things will really start to add up.

To be honest, the Beck 904 is not a true copy/clone of the original. It is a modern take on it with modern day performance in mind.

If you want the best near exact copy of a 904, the M&W Technic 904 is hands down the best.
Mr. Martin only makes about 4 904's a year and they are very hard to tell from an original.
The details he puts into their 904 are incredible. At Rennsport 2 there was a Technic 904 and a real one parked right next to each other. Even the die hard Porsche historians had a hard time telling which one was the imposter!
However with the dollar vs the pound at the moment you would be looking at $82K for a rolling chassis.

So I'd say the 904 could possibly go as high as $80k but then demand will be quite limited as you can build/buy an ultimate RSR replica which in my opinion has a wider appeal....

Yes but the 917 at racecareplicas is about 45K only needing engine and transmision...

How much more interior room is gained by the cockpit lengthening?

Cheers

Has Fran Hall (RCR) completed any 917 "replicas" ? he uses his own design and construction for the frame that is VERY different than the original. You can put a V-8 in his as the basic structure is used for his GT40, Lola T70 kits as well.
Kraftwerke (new zealand) does a much better job on the frame (and is even working on 906 replicas to boot !)
ThunderRanch? Mc Burnie? Not so sure of his ability to deliver in a timely manner- he is a busy guy with the RSK and 550 replicas

I saw the 904 there as well. Last year, Chuck Beck was there with one of his "Mules". This was much, much nicer.

I am certainly no expert, but with 4 cam engines going for $125K, I figured this was a REAL one. It looked fantastic!

I really wanted to turn that key!

Well.......was it?!

I talked to fran about 3 weeks ago. They have completed some, but I can not remember how many. They have two versions of it. One is a tube for tube accurate frame and the other has a front monocoque that has the drivers feet behind the front axel center line.

A 906 would be cool, I mentioned that to fran as well, but he was not interested at this time.

Cheers

I will scan the article on 911 and Porsche World. The writer tested the 2 917 replicas on the track.

The Kraftwerkz car had been estensively modified from the original package and yet it did not inspired confidence on a race course.
The writer said it was a beautifully made car that would look stunning in any museum or driving down the road, but if the purpuse of buying one is for track/racing use then one should look elsewhere.

The LM 917 instead had a slightly modified and stronger frame (steel instead of alu with strenghtening bits everywhere) with a rigidity that was 3x the original 917 one.

The LM 917 looked less stunning but on the track it was a weapon.

The writer said that you could see where the money had gone in developing the car.

So it all depends on what people look for, doesn't it?

Surely Fran's car will bring another alternative to the table. And this is wonderful.

But I really doubt you can buy a good quality turnkey car these days (call it 906, 917, 911 RSR) for less than $50k

All I can say is , if you have never had a Kit/Replica/Reproduction you had better look/sit/drive one before shelling out any money or you MIGHT just be highly disappointed.

I know I was,

This isn't a Porsche replicar, but it receives good recommendations/reviews, and the kit price appears to be considerably south of $50k. While the factory pushes SBC V8s as the powerplant (they're relatively cheap), it uses a G50 gearbox. I've seen earlier versions with a flat 6.

Ttweed here might have some input.

In California, there is a special provision for kit built cars called SB 100. A limited number of permits are issued Jan 1st of each year that allow home builts, kits to be registered. Better find out directly from california dmv what the rules are well in advance of the Jan 1st date.
Then get yourself to the DMV before they open, on the 2nd, as large kit sellers ( like Superformance for their GT40' Cobras, Daytonas) are there with their client lists for the same thing.
You can rest assured that all the permits have been gobbled up by Jan 3rd

McLaren used a couple of Ultimas as test mules when developing the F1 - that's a pretty good recommendation

I love the Chuck Beck 904

FEDERAL LAW requires smog compliant engines for new vehicles. CA requires smogged motors for "kitcars" or "homebuilts"....unless you get one of the 500 exemptions under SB 100. Personally, it's my opinion, the schills that the kit manufacturers send to DMV are committing fraud.

Florida may do something different, they seem be their own Country. They even have/had their own Bush.....

If you really want to know how the Kraftwerks 917 compares to the real deal, talk to a guy who owns both....

Ottocar Von Jacobs also owns 917-10 #16

Or one of these. Like the Ultima, not a replica of anything, and an original design. Mid engine, Porsche Transaxle, tube frame, AC, heat, power windows.

I finished building one not too long ago. Big project, but an insane car to drive.

Here's my car at last years SEMA show.

More info about the project at www.gtmbuild.com
