Fading rearview mirror

Normally things fade in my rearview mirror :) but lately it is my rearview mirror that is fading....

All joking aside, the reflective mirror portion of my rearview mirror is fading. The mirror is fixed strongly to the windshield and I am hesitant to buy a cheap replacement and remove the old one-- both for looks/originality and that the old one woud likely be hard to take off.

Is it possible to replace just the glass? Are their shops that would replace the glass and is it expensive? Does anyone have a replacement for a 72? It also doesn't help that my car has a deep tinted rear window....

Sorry for the oblique post-- it is approaching 2 a.m. and I can't sleep.....

why not just buy a nice used one for $35 from a salvage yard? they're still pretty common. find one with excellent glass and the rest can be "refurbished". use black satin for the base and arm and vinyl spray paint for the back of the mirror. a new adhesive is $5 brand new.

That glass doesn't seem like it could be replaced. There's a hard plastic seal around the housing & glass attachment that looks like it's been shrunk on. I haven't tried a heat gun. The housing and ball are attached to the mounting metal fixture with a small dia screw way up in a hole seen from the bottom of the ball arm.

Other than that I use a heat gun to heat the glass to mirror glue to remove and install them.
