Having trouble finding these parts for '72 911

My father is getting all new chrome instead of shadowlined trim pieces. Problem is, we cant seem to find these parts.

-Quarter Window Frame L&R (chrome)
-Door Frames L&R (chrome)

Its for a 1972 911 T

Any help would be greatly appreciated. We have already checked Tweeks, Mid America Motorwerks and the like. Im a BMW guy so be easy on me, I wouldnt know how to start on Porsches. Big fan, though! Thanks for the help in advance. :)

Just what exactly are 'shadowlined trim pieces' ???

There was only one style for the window trim in 1972 ... it was a combination of brightwork composed of clear anodized aluminum and chrome.

New or used?

CleanAzzE30z 09-13-2005 02:45 PM

Preferably new. Shadowline is what some of us BMW people say when the window and other assorted trim pieces which usually come in chrome are blacked out. Fancy talk for something simple, really. My fathers had been blacked out by a previous owner. I hope I didnt imply this was from the factory, sorry. I know it wasnt. The option on the newer (E46's and newer) BMWs was called "shadowline". Thats all. Us older bimmer owners like to do that to our trim since chrome/aluminum trim all over the place corroding is disgusting, IMO. :) Thanks for the quick reponses!!

I think you are out of luck for the door frames. I believe they are the dreaded NLA(No longer Avaiable). The part # for the movable rear window chrome frames are left- 901.543.015.25 and for the right-901.543.016.25. I checked Stoddard's website. They list the right one for $608 but out of stock. Call them. They may be able to order them. This is probably one of those items that when the inventory is gone they will become NLA. Good Luck.

Have you tried TREMOTORSPORT. Ask for dave or jeromy for used.

Buy used ones & have them chromed, or chrome your father's frames. Put new window felts and seals in & you have as good as new.

IIRC, the early frames are clear anodized aluminum. (At least mine are, '72T). Chrome probably wouldn't look quite right. (Subtle difference, but noticable.)

You might talk to an anodizing shop and see if they can strip the black and reanodize them clear. This can be tricky if the parts were previously anodized black, but if they were just painted, it should be no problem. My anodizer charges a minimum $50, but you can get a lot of stuff done for that $50. Of course, you will have to remove all glass and seals. It might be cheaper than new/used frames.

Good luck,
Jim

IMHO, I see no point in buying these new anyway. They are abundant in salvage yards and you should be able to find some very nice pieces.

Wow. Thanks for all this info. I am very pleasantly surprised at the help Ive recieved thus far. To be honest, I didnt know what kind of response a BMW fanatic would get on a Porsche forum, hehe. I will get right on all the options mentioned. You have to understand my father, hes kind of a "factory/brand new" nut when at all possible. I think the car looks tits as is, honestly, I love the smoked/no chrome look (as you can probably tell by my cars, :) ), but hes old school, so I respect his preference in the chrome O.G. look. His car anyways. Any more help would be appreciated and once again, thank you.

One more thing. Ive googled TRE Motorsport and cant seem to find their site, even though I was led back to this forum a few times. From what I see, they look like they know what theyre doing. Anyone with contact info? Thanks again.
