5 digit Paint codes...and my '72

When did Porsche change to the 5 digit paint codes? I was trying to figure out what color of orange my 72 was and my plate only has 018 on it (for tangerine orange) not a number like 334-9-3.
I also thought from all the pictures I've seen that it was Signal Orange, but either a lot of people dont know what color their car really is, or Porsche changed it from year to year. Mine is exactly the color of a bright navel orange, and from the code its Tangerine. I think ive decided away from viper green and go back with the factory color, but I tell you, I REALLY like this color.. Anyone know what it is? Im sure its not a factory color from Porsche, but anyone know? Some kind of Periwinkle?

That is a nice color but I have no idea what color it is.

As for paint tags. The 5 digits break down as.. the first three numbers are the color. The next number , in this case 9 is the brand of paint. 9 is Glasurit. The last number is the paint application location. Be it Porsche or Karmann or Ruetters for instance.

Maybe your tag isn't original?

In '71 the colour plate had the paint code, Tangerine was 2310/2323 (Coupe/Targa), but there was also a colour Chart No. (018). From '72 on this 3 digit code appeares on the paint plate. My Guards Red '74 has 027 on the plate, and the colour chart for that year shows G8 G8 / G8 V9 (Coupe/Targa)

Here is the paint tag on my RS, which is Tangerine BTW. Bobby has the right idea but wrong order. The middle number is place of application, '9' is Porsche factory and I think '8' is Karmann. The last number is the paint manufacturer, '2' is Glasurit. '1' is Lesonal (sp?), not sure what '3' is.

My tag looks like that one except it only says 018 , it doesnt have the other two numbers behind it. I think I read somewhere that the tag changed to the 5 digit sometime in '72, but ive seen some earlier ones with 5 digit. Oh well...

Anyway,. any ideas on the periwinkle color?

Porsche Crest

The use of 3-digit paint codes and 3-segmented data plate info began in August 1971 for the '72 models.
