Now, about that ignition problem

Yes, I've searched the archive... If it were not possible to be a top 100 lurker and have alot of posts, I'd ah posted more. huh?

Anyway, the question is; Can a visual inspection of the points be meaningful at all? The points look ok, however, the rotor shows a little corrosion. Don't worry I plan to replace both.

It's 76 911s with the original 2.7 CIS. The thing just all of a sudden started miss firing and back firing... almost made it home until I had to stop for a left. She then died and hasn't run since. Turns over just fine, narry a hint of it firng though... I know, I know time to buy a dwell meter to go with the timing light.

My 1977 2.7 CIS did a similar thing last year - scared the heck out of me. I pulled over poked around and ended up scraping the rotor cap edge with my keys to make it shinny again. That fixed it enough to get home. The next day it ran great. Then 24 hours later the crazy sputtering returned.

I then ordered the Pertronix Ignitor kit from Pelican. You will have to re-set the timing or you will be missing low end power and run a little hot.

Somone just put in a Crain, might want to look the thread up.

Rob,

Take a look over the entire set of spark plug wires with the engine running on a dark, moonless night, or in a closed garage ... looking for arcing & sparks to ground and any blue glowing 'corona' effect. You may need to replace the wire between the connectors, which unscrew from the cables.

Here is a PDF document from Beru detailing the screw-on M3 connectors for bulk ignition cable to replace worn, cracked Hypalon wires:

Yes
If you turn the engine manually clockwise until the points hit a high lobe of the distributor there should be a space between the 2 contacts. A rough estimate is the thickness of a match book cover. They would have to be nearly closed for your issues to arise due to worn points. Points should be adjusted periodically. Buy feeler gauges.

Points pitting is another story.
