Part # for large port SSi's for 3.2? (larger secondaries than 1.5")

I spoke to Tyson Schmidt over the weekend at GAF. He recommended an exhaust revision that would net more power. Is there a large port SSi available for a 3.2? I am currently running the thick flanged 3.2L SSi's. The outside diameter of the primaries is 1.5" and after they merge is 2".

I checked the Pelican catalog first and didn't see any reference to these particular SSi's. I'm sure they exist, based on his recommendation, what size are they and where can I buy them?

Thanks,

Doug

There has been a lot of discussion on this, and I don't think that large-tube SSI's exist (at least, I have never been able to find them for my car). Perhaps Tyson meant stainless headers by GHL or someone like that?

I know of a couple of sets they made for a guy that had been enlarged at the port to 1 5/8. But I think they quickly shrunk down to the standard 1 1/2. AFIK there is not an off the shelf one available bigger than 1 1/2. Have you considered 993 HE (1 5/8) with a custom muffler?

Jeff

Tyson and I were talking about that subject (993 HE), but I like my current muffler - it is a very clean setup - so we concluded that finding the larger SSi's would be the ticket. He also suggested using 993 HEs and then making cross over adaptors to fit the current muffler. That is an option, but we'll see.

SSI(the company) does not make SSI(the header/heater box) w/ different size pipes(unless they started something new very recently)

1.5" OD(38mm) primaries, Id is 1 3/8"(35mm) feeding a 42mmID collector.

I keep hearing conflicting stories on this. I was told recently that they now make 1 3/4" versions.

So it's not true?

I wonder why not? From the discussion on this board you think that there would be a market for them (I'de buy a set).

Bill, Jeff and All,
I appreciate your responses!
Tyson had alluded to the new, large port SSi's. I got the impression it was a new product. I'll track down the SSI company's phone # and post my findings.

Thanks,

Doug

Bill,
I have yet to see you wrong.
All,
Stainless Systems (Maker of SSis) only makes 1.5" primaries (albeit with long, equal length primaries.) John Daniels (owner) was very nice and offered some fundamental explanations. He says that the primaries are large enough for most of his audience, including 3.6 owners. He does agree that above 4500 rpm, there could be pumping losses especially with the larger displacement engines, but area under the curve, for the average user is maximized. Don't want to open a can of worms related to tradeoffs of exhaust design, here. John was friendly, but confirmed that they do not make larger diameter products. John said primary size reflects HP levels more than anything else and his are good (or effective) up to about 275 crank horsepower (as are the Porsche factory ones). Apparently, he gets lots of calls making the same inquiries.

Anyone see a market for the SSi quality, but for engines which make more than 275 crank horsepower? Maybe M&K (MB911) should look into this?

Doug

I agree w/ all of the above, I did use SSIs for a couple of years and they are fine for lower rpm use, maybe even better than the bigger pipes. But you do this sort of thing for the kick in the pants from 4500 - 7500 rpm. For that you will want 1 5/8" OD for a 3.2 and 1 3/4" for a 3.6. There are other variables that can influence the decision but there really aren't that many choices.
