Is it worth parting out a MFI 72E motor
Anybody have any experience parting a motor?
Is it worth it or just a hassle ? and is a 72E motor worth parting out or selling as a whole. This would be to offset a 3.6 or 3.2 swap. The motor runs really pretty good , I put brand new SSI's and silencer , has all the MFI in great condition( runs a little rich though might just need adjusting never looked into it) , good oil pressure, oil cooler leaks bad, Is a E case worth anything for the #'s . E cams ? Can these work in a 3.0? Any thoughts |
Is there any parts off a E motor that are worth something besides the MFI stuff and
SSI heat exchangers. What would be a fair price for almost new SSI heat exchangers? |
maybe 80% of new price on the SSIs? It would be a deal for someone.
I would think you're better off selling the whole motor, running, than parting out. if I was building a motor and needed cams or whatever, I would buy new to avoid other potential problems. But that's just me. |
Why not just sell the complete engine? Less hassle and you should get just as much money as you would parting it out.

80% off new price wow I was thinking like 50% max 60% off new price. I guess the only reason Im thinking of parting it is I dont see too many people interested in a motor that is pretty leaky. It would definitely need to be resealed so I think that really kills the value. So what would a leaky E motor be worth to someone? again thanks. |
don't know the history of your engine , but when i took my 73 apart for the rebuild , there was almost nothing in it that was reusable
the crank shaft was the only thing that didn't need refurbishing ( other than polishing ) oh , and the oil pump and gears had to refurbish the crankcase, the rods, the heads and toss away the P&C's the valves , the springs the camshafts and the rockers , tensioners and so on... i still have the camshafts laying around , but the value is next to nothing since they need welding and grinding , the shipping cost to camgrinder in the US is more than they're worth. you could part it out and throw things on ebay , but my experience is people don't bid on worn out things if you advertise them that way, and if you don't , it's fraud a full engine however they will bid on , since they all hope it might still be good on the inside , even if you just say , pulled from car in running condition , no warranties on the internals whatsoever... |
To get the most money from the motor. First run a compression test. Then sell the longblock. Then sell the MFI, SSIs, and other perifery seperate. i.e. fan, shroud, dizzy, cooler.

If it was me....I would want to buy it as a package, and rebuild it to RS specs. So I'd want the SSI's, MFI, and all the rest on it. I simply wouldn't be interested in that engine missing all that stuff.
If your engine is fairly tired as it sounds....it is likely worth $1500-2000 max I would guess. That is all I would pay....about $1500 total. There is just so much money involved in rebuilding a 911 engine, that it's not worth needing the work. My 2 cents.... With that said, how much were you hoping to get for the entire engine package??? Any pictures of the engine? |

Guys, remember I want an almost worn out everything to use as a mule so I can demo various malfunctions, mal-adjustment, and extreme wear. Most (sensible) people want a rebuildable engine. Stijn had a classic example that probably was too expensive to rebuild. I would make it where it has continuously jumping pump timing, three bad nozzles (all on one side), a cam out of time, a valve with negative clearance, the cold start dribbling, throttles out of correlation, the thermostat stuck on, the mixture adjusted to compensate and a 911T MFI pump. That will actually run but demonstrate all sorts of interesting symptoms. Now, lead a group through a CMA session with it and bring it back from the dead. Best, Grady |

Grady- Right now the motor is still in the car and I think is still very strong, for 165hp anyway. On a nice hard packed dirt road it still has the hp to power slide the rear, still very fun.
but right now im a little all over the map, im not sure what im going to do with the motor. Im leaving sunday for work and I will be away for 4-8 weeks, whatever I decide it will have to wait till I get back. Im considering parting it out like Bobboloo suggested, but Im still unsure what im going to do. If you want PM me if you want me to let you know when I get the motor out when I get back. Thanks again and I will try to tune in now and then with more of my boring questions. |
