Pics of my 1978 SC In Chicago
I'm Tom the newbee from Chicago with my first Pcar -- a 78 911SC. Finally attaching some pics of same.
I have been told there were 187K miles on the chasis but 43K miles on this engine after the rebuild. Busted rear fuse relay that I temporarily fixed: But only after I decided to replace the 2 switches on the master cylinder. Those weren't the culprit -- the relay was: Funky Euro plaid interior - I wonder if this was ever standard? Also -- My first order to Pelican has been submitted. It consists of Wayne's Book, rear lens and seal, one Mahle filter and one right license light. Will try to upload more later... -Tom Last edited by acapella8; 09-12-2005 at 07:39 AM.. |

Nice Tom. The seats are Ruf-ish! (some of the RUF cars had retro seat material

Thanks. My weekend project includes: installing new relay, new rear lens, and cleaning the engine AND changing the oil for the first time.
Any advice for changing the oil for a first-timer?

Get a big big catch pan...
Do a search on oil change. First timers usually create a spill worthy of an EPA fine

Welcome to the club! Nice car. I like the interior. You won't see another one like that at every Porsche get together.
On oil changes-yes. Do a search. Lots of great info. However I will say that one of the recommendations was one of those catch pan/storage container all in one things. I tried one and the oil drained into the shallow catch faster than it could drain into the seperate container part. Yes that = a big mess. Just a big, open tupperware type box works great. Just to be sure-lay a 5x7 plastic tarp down under the back of your car to catch splatter and/or spillage. Enjoy! |

Very nice ride ! Actually like the retro interior.
I read so many "warnings" about oil change my anxiety level at my first change was ridiculous. The trickiest part was to refill it to an appropriate level. Easy to overfill. Make sure you drive it to normal operating temp before judging the stick (and gauge). First time mine was a little cooler than normal which made the reading "too" low - and so I overfilled. In the middle between the low and high mark on the stick and (in my case) approx at 3 o´clock on the gauge is fine. The experts on this forum will correct me if I am wrong..

Nice car,
Oil change get the 15 quarts pan but no matter what, it is going to splash. This is amazing to see how fast the oil drained (a quart per second). Wear some rubber glove to protect your skin from hot oil

I agree with Frenchy. Wear heavy duty rubber gloves with long cufs (as long as you can find). The oil comes out fast and is HOT. I also use Kitty Litter to clean up spilled oil (not that happens very much). Learned about both the hard way!
Good luck, Alan

Tom,
Welcome to the club. Nice car. I really like the wheels. It kinda reminds me of my car... I would lose the bra, and maybe lower it a tad from the front (could just be the pictures). Just my $.02. Enjoy!

Nice car...
Also, Did you forget to order a hood shock (real easy to replace) and... Rear engine compartment pad. Looks like that pad is chaffing and could possily cause filter blockage.

Just got home and took some pictures....
It appears that I have the upgraded carrera hydraulic tensioners. Can anyone confirm? Thanks... Left side (from rear): Right Side (from rear): Does the oil that appears on the left side one appear normal? This will sound newbie, but I don't have Wayne's book yet -- so tonight I will take pictures of what I can see -- and what I do not know what the component is for the forums comment. |

Nice car! Welcome fellow Chicagoan. Check for a popoff valve install in the airbox. Cheap insurance for those CFI backfires!!

Unless the rubber portion of the cam tower feeder lines are dried, cracked and leaking, you can tighten the compression fittings and it'll stop the leaks.
Glenn is correct about the pop-off valve in the airbox. It's good to have one. (It's a relief in case you get back fire up to the airbox.) |

How come I never got an invitation to join Gruppe B? Do I smell bad? Bad teeth? Rough hands? Wrong Caste? Let me know.

Pelicaners,
Okay, Wayne's book should arrive to me tomorrow, and I'm sure I'll know more of these. I'm not afraid to plead ignorant on some of these, so I'll post pictures where I've numbered components in my engine compartment. Please comment and feel free to be brutal to the newbee... ( Tom is not too proud to admit he doesn't know some of these. ) Thanks guys.... -Tom |
