Memories of your car...before pelican

Okay. The post of forum history got me to thinking about my car before Pelican and after. B.P. and A.P. if you will.

Did your car survive the board without mods or at the very least taking stuff off to make it lighter, easier to work on etc?

I know I bought my car before I found this site so my car went thru a transformation of sorts after being here for a while.

I can't imagine too many leaving their car stock after hanging around this place.

Just a few of the things off the top of my head I did.

Removal of ac .
Removal of rear seats.
Replaced vinyl seats with leather.
Momo wheel and shift knob.
Aftermarket front valance and rockers.
New carpet.
Exhaust and premuffler upgrade.
Not to mention all the repairs and such done by me with info from here.

The list goes on...

Before Pelican? I thought changing my oil was about as mechanical as I could get....

As of right now, my 911 is up on jack stands and motor out for a full suspension upgrade and rebuild, clutch and pressure plate replacement. All of this in my own garage been done by myself with the help of some of the Gruppe B guys.

Who woulda thought.

Hmmm, basically no work, since I knew NADA. Didn't even know what size, what year, what condition my engine was in. Trusted the P.O. on everything. Very risky.

Before ALGORE invented the internet, my car had the "mods" it enjoys now...H-1's, sports seats, stainless muffler, beefed suspension, front bumperettes removed, 7" RS wheels, and a few other goodies. Once I'd reached such perfection, I decided not to screw with it any further. Glad I resisted the urge to follow the pack who were adding flares, stripes, and spoilers....

Hmmm. I did research on pelican prior to buying, so I thought I knew what I was getting into. Now I've done the following:

-Engine drop
-Clutch replacement
-G50 update
-Valve adjustment
-FR & RR suspension bushing replacement
-FR & Rear Bilsteins
-Lowered to just below euro
-Home alignment and corner balance
-Sent my wheels to Al Reed for his magic touch
-Installed a euro premuff
-Installed a M&K muffler

And lots of other things I can't think of right now!

Not only is Wayne draining my wallet, but I found out about people like Al Reed, and mb911. It's a sickness I tell ya....

Next up Rennaire A/C or Steve Wong chip...

MAKE THE BAD MAN STOP!!!!

Yep, back before pelican and rennlist (and porschefans) for me, it was Porsche/vw trends, panorama that incited all the trouble.

I still have a magazine with a "folger styling" 911 I looked at every day.

Found Pelican shortly after buying the car. It's definitely had an effect on the beauty as she sits today.....Kind of like a cosmetic surgeon making an "8" into a "10", at least in my eyes. As she ages, she'll need more surgery....

The creation of this BBS was sheer genius on Wayne's part. Without the BBS, I would have been perfectly happy with my 911. Now, I have a to do list nearly a full page, and several thousand dollars, long.

My wife encouraged me to buy a 911 because I was spending so much time maintaining and fixing two old International Scouts, and she said that if I bought a 911 in good condition, I could just drive it and not spend as much time working on it.

She has since been disabused of that notion. At least, she likes driving the Porsche better than she did the Scouts.

Have to say I've only been an owner for 4 days and already have the 911 down to bear minimum ready for the media blasting. My wish list is way too long to list but I'm sure everyone of you can figure all of it. Thanx Wayne and all the great pelican-ites.(is that a word?)

I'd go so far as saying that Pelican has probably "de-mistified" the whole 911 experience... But in a good way.

Really, anything that helps the folks who love these 'old' cars keep them on the road at reasonable expense is terrific. 'Cause they are essentially getting well into the old category and without some of the stuff I've learn't on the board, I might have given the whole thing away and bought a BMW

....bragging again, I see. I would too if I had a car like yours.

...back on topic.
After Pelican:
Poly-Bronze bushings and a prototipo wheel as well as Al Reed polished 16 x7&9. I would have used neatrix and probably a stock looking 15x7&8s ...kind of wish I had resisted the polished look.

I've kept my car stock, even after listening to the Pelicanheads.

I mean, having stock running gear from an '87 in a '73 tub still qualifies as stock, doesn't it? So I'm still stock.

Except for maybe some bigger torsion bars. But that's all.
Except for the light flywheel & clutch.
Except for the seats & harnesses.
Except for the rear flares. Oh, wait! They came off the '87 too, so they're stock for sure.
Except for the exhaust.
Except for........

Yada yada, whatever. Never mind..... I'm a Pelicanhead, too.

Ok, here we go…

Before Pelican Parts:

After reading about and seeing many extraordinary cars on Pelican Parts, the following projects have now been completed:

• Removal of AC
• Fitment of 7 & 8” Fuchs
• Complete engine rebuild (complete with higher compression Mahle P & B)
• Fitment of a front mounted 28-bar brass oil cooler
• Numerous oil changes
• Several Valve adjustments (on both my car and friends)
• Fitment of Carrera Stripes
• Preparation, painting and fitment of a Ducktail

Now:

The next project? A complete suspension overhaul and upgrade.

After that, who knows?

Those 914’s with a 3.6 sound very interesting…

I found this site doing research - found Jack O's BB1 site which linked here.

I will credit Pelican for not convincing me to buy a 911 (been planning on it for months prior) but blowing 2x my expected upgrade budget in no time flat.

7+8" Fuchs
the 930S steering wheel
then the Rod at Car Audio Innovations trend - got into that
1" below Euro - that was a hot topic for awhile
Seats,
Oh, and the euro premuffler fad
RUF airdam,
and on and on. My car is a rolling Pelican to - do list. Next:
3.6

I think that the BBS opened up everybodies eyes and showed that it is more than alright to personalize and modify your car. I think it will also help to inform and in the long run bring up the resale value in peoples investment in aftermarket parts and services which will benifit the bussines and owners of the cars as well. Who is sick when you read B.A.,s Market report and read that a mint 69 T is only worth 10K. In my opinion for a magizine to actually pay a guy to write that crap and at the same time promote the industry I would fire him 1st thing and get sombody younger in who can appreate that those in the bussiness need to charge $90-$100 per hour not $25 .Thanks for the BBS
