Used G50 Tranny vs. Fixing 915
I have a 1986 Targa with 113,000 on the clock. I believe the 915 synchro's are worn. It is getting harder to shift from 1st - 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd is npt that great.
What would it cost to get synchro's fixed on a 915 (+labor) vs. finding a G50 with low mileage on it (maybe even w/LSD) and having that installed? pcarcarerra |

I think you'll find that fixing the 915 is the more economical approach. Fitting a G50 won't be cheap.

So fix 915 = $2000 (?)
Get G50 = $1,000,000 |

G50 conversion = ~ $4000 for the G50, rebuild, and conversion parts. There's a thread in the history here on it somewhere.
Patrick Motorsports (AZ) sells a conversion kit. Markus '80 SC Targa |

pcarcarerra - 915 -> G50 is not a direct swap. The G50 uses a hydraulic clutch - the 915 is a cable mechanism. That means to use a G50, you need a new pedal cluster, MC, hydraulic lines....

... not to mention the G-50 won't fit where the 915 was, due to being too wide and long ...
So, you get to choose between a coil-over conversion, or cutting, pounding, and welding in the '87 - '89 torsion bar tubes and rear suspension mounts and assorted transplanted pan parts from a donor car!

I my opinion, there is absolutely no reason to go for the G-50 swap when you compare the amount of products available for the 915 vs. the costs for the conversion. Although I do think that the conversion is cool to see, it is not worth it. There are numerous 915's out there handling gobs of power on the street and the track and are not have the issues that they have had in the past...with the right modifications that is.
Check out some of the products offered by WEVO. Here is a demo tranny that they had at the German Autofest that was filled with modifications. ![]() -Britain
