Electric Expert: Fuel / Oil Level Guage?

Noticed something peculiar with my fuel / oil level guage.

When I pull the ground off the back of the guage, the oil level guage works but the fuel doesn't. When I replace it, the fuel guage works and the oil level doesn't.

Any guesses on why this would occur?

1982 SC

Michael

Check the grounds on the car at the senders (oil and fuel).

Grounds are connected. What am I looking for? Is there a way to measure the output from the oil level indicator to check what it's putting out?

The resistance in the sender changes as the float goes up and down. It doesn't output anything.

If the grounds are clean and connected, I'd check resistance across the sending units and then verify that the resistance at the connections to the gauges are the same as measured at the sending units (respectively). It should be very close, if not the same. The gauges themselves just measure resistance in the wires to the sender and that of the sender itself. The wires should offer little to no resistance relative to the senders. If the resistances are consistent I'd suspect the gauge is to blame or double check the ground connections at the gauge itself.

Warren (early_s_man) has posted many times his recipe for cleaning contacts, which may be necessary.

Solution found.

Cleaned up the connections to the oil level sender. I mean, really cleaned them up, tightened everything else up. Put on a new ground strap from the tranny to the frame (the old one was worse than I thought).

Oil level works like a champ. Thanks for the advice. And also the lesson on how it works i.e resistance.
