Rust in my fuel filter.

I had my gas tank removed, chemically etched and recoated a while back because my mechanic found rust in my fuel filter. The thing is... he's still finding small amounts of rust in the filter. My mechanic wants me to replace the tank but I want to be damn sure it's nothing else before I go forking over that kind of dough. Where else in the lines between the tank and the fuel filter could there be serious rust?

Thanks,

nik

I don't know about the '80 SC, but my car has some sections of steel gas line where it penetrates bulkheads and such.

The 1980 only has the fuel line between the fuel pump at the tank and the filter. Have you removed the screen at the bottom of the tank and checked it? Was the tank professionally done?

yeah, the tank was sent out to a shop that just does tank repair.

Not sure what to do. If the tank comes out is it possible to see in there properly to check for rust?

I had the same problem. You have to disconect the fuel lines and blow them out with an air line. Both the supply and the return. Then i instaled a clear fuel filter right before the fuel pump and before the main fuel filter. the clear filters are cheap only $4.00 each and you can monitor the problem easily. You can do the whole job in an hour. then you can just replace the cheap filters instead of the main expensive one. the problem should go away after you blow the lines and drive it once, after that you will have to change the clear filters once.
