Motor/transmisison mounts

I need new motor and tranny mounts. In looking at the Pelican catalog I see basically three choices....OEM, Sport mounts, and WEVO. Which is the best for my 78SC which I may do an occasional DE with but mostly a fun street car, but not a daily driver. Price on these is really not an object.

I would eliminate OEM from the list.

I went with the sport mounts based on what I have seen here & theCO$T of the WEVO mounts. I'm not sure if the additional $ buys all that much more in a motor mount.

I just talked to my wrench about this (one of my rears has completely disintegrated) - he suggested going with the sport mounts, the wevos are still very stiff and will translate that way in daily driving - the sports are more ridged than the stock, but still comfortable if you're mostly on the street. I've looked around the BBS and in Wayne's book and it seems like an easy diy job.

Do sport mounts for both tranny and engine. You'll be happy with them.

The best combo Ive used and use currently is what Jack Olsen recommended to me a few years ago..
I originally went with sport rear and stock trans mounts.. but, I now have sport trans mounts and solid rear/engine mounts.
The solid rear and sport trans is what Jack said to use in the first place. from what I remember him saying, the eng/rear ones make the biggest difference and the front/trans mounts make the most noise. I have no issues with solid rear and sport front.... I recommend that for street use with limited track use.. At the time wevo semi solid was not available-fyi.. I have no experience with those yet!
good luck

What does stiffer mounts really do?
Better shifting or anything more?

I had put sports in the tranny and solids in the motor. Harsh! But I did not mind it. I now have the WEVO ones in the motor and the sports are still in the tranny. When the motor is out this winter, I will put WEVO ones in the tranny as well.

Jeff (catca), What were the differences between the solid mounts and the WEVOs in terms of ride, noise transmission and throttle response?

There was no difference in shifting quality, throttle response. There was a small reduction in transmission and engine noise/vibration. I mainly changed to them becuase I am conveting to carbs and they are recommended by PMO over the solid ones. Now I am not saying I believe PMO 100% on the war against solid mounts on carbed cars, but I wanted to eliminate all the possible problems.

Cheers

How does the polygraphite mount that pelican sells compare to the Wevo Semi solid ones?
Are they softer or stiffer?

Hi Mark,
I think for your intended use of the SC, you would be happy with sports at the tranny, and either sports or Wevo at the rear. (hard to leave that car alone huh?)......Doug

Just want to thank you all for the input. Evren & I were discussing motor mounts in emails. I'm still running originals under the "if it ain't broke" theory. The car we're discussing is a mildly hot rodded '69 coupe, around 200 horsepower...to be used 99% street. Rallies, with the rare autocross or track day outing.
Any suggestions there? (edit) I've sent Evren a link to this....

Why did the cabs have stiffer engine mounts?

Due to increased chassis flex from the lack of a roof.

I Wevo'd all 4 of mine. More noticable transmission whine. But the shift quality took a big jump forward. I alway's struggled with my 1st from traffic lights as it would often baulk/block me out in a hurried shift. 2nd was not the best either. Small improvement with the Wevo coupler but......

After the Wevo mounts my car now shifts like a modern tranny should.

I think that over time the original mounts had distorted and moved the engine and transmission ever so slightly out of alignment.

Oh no, they definitely flex!

I've got sport mounts on trans and motor. Drivetrain feels a little more secure. For the $, probably best option.

I was thinking on getting some sport mounts since mine probably are 28 yerrs old!!

Then I saw someonre rekomend sports in the trany and solid or wevo at the engine. I was thinking about the polygraphite that Pelican also sells, but I have not read anything about them.

don't forget to inspect the metal plates (very large washers) that go between the bolt and rubber mount. they act as a safety if the mount fails, and might even be necessary to compress the rubber to keep the mount functioning properly.

i had a new mount let go, the rubber just slipped thru the collar...i don't recall if the washer was there or not, or might have just disintegrated. it was an AWFUL feeling following my wife as she drove the 911, and noticing the muffler bouncing up and down!!
