Steering wheel wobble
Howdy...
My steering column (shaft) started to wobble (12 to 6 o'clock direction) and behaves as if the bushing (or is it bearing?) is loose. I recall that there was a simple fix (replacement insert or ?) that does not require taking apart the entire steering column assembly... Many Thanks! Last edited by Jascha; 09-22-2005 at 05:52 PM.. |

You've got the right diagnosis. It's exactly the symptom for a steering column bushing, which is an easy and cheap fix. You can find the part here or by searching for "steering wheel column bushing" here on Pelican Parts website.

I just did this same repair last week on the SC. It was so cheep and easy it almost didn't seem to be a Porsche repair.

It sounds like the bushing. The original is plastic & disintegrates with time. It can be replaced for a few bucks with a metal one from our host. It did it on mine (1986) a few months ago - just pull off the horn pad - carefull not to break the wire. Unbolt the steering wheel & slide it off the column then slip the new bushing over the column & slide it into place & reassemble. Takes about 20 minutes. A word of caution - when unbolting the steering wheel don't let it turn so that you run the rack all the way to the end as that can damage the steering rack. Do a search & you will find several threads on this topic.

You've got it and we have all had it. Fortunately it is an easy repair.

What a knowledgeable Chorus...
Question: Did you ‘drive-in' a new rubber bushing or just used the metal sleeve that Pelican sells...? p.s. found the page... http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_Steering-bushing/911_steering_bushing.htm Great solution!

I ordered a new quick-fix sleeve for mine when I got my rack spacers.
Went to install it and there was no plastic bushing. Apparently, the PO had already done this fix. I didn't really have a problem but figured to have it on hand and look anyway.

I did this last summer, using the metal sleeve (believe it has a 928 part #). It just slipped right in -- didn't have to use any excessive force at all. When you take the steering wheel off, you may or may not find the remnants of the old bushing. If there are still pieces, pull them out using a needle nose pliers. Articles I read said don't sweat it if some of the pieces fall down into the steering column. Like Rick V said - quick and easy.
