Lightbulb Targa roof rack

Hi,

Ever wished you had a roof rack for your Targa so that you could haul tires to the track? Well here it is:

Turns out this is a factory option. I picked it up used from EASY in Emoryville (no more available), but my Mechanic says it is still in the price books, which in theory means that it is still available.

The front rail attaches in front with gutter rail mounts that are angled:

The back rail is attached to screw holes that are pre-drilled in the leading edge of the Targa bar:

If you look on your Targa bar, you will see two plastic plugs on each side that cover those screw holes.

The basket that comes with it isn't big enough to hold more than one tire, so I tried a different approach. I bundled two tires together, and then lashed the bundled to the front and back bars with no other support. It works pretty well, so I've decided that no basket is really necessary. In my picture, I'm only hauling two tires, but I figure I could add a third atop the two that are in contact with the cross rails. I'm concerned about adding a fourth, as the Factory rates the rack at only 35Kg, so three tires is pushing the spec.

The design doesn't seem so difficult to duplicate with some light welding. The only improvement that I would like to make is some sort of quick release for the back rail assembly so that it doesn't have to be unscrewed from the Targa bar when at the track. Pretty nifty, huh?

The pictures didn't seem to work in my last post. Here are the pictures again!

I have always wondered what the heck those twin screw covers on each side of the Targa bar were for. In fact, I am trying to find the part number for replacement pieces since two of mine are broken some ways into the bar.

Does anyone know if this is the only reason these tapped holes were put in the 'bar?

Thanks much,
John

Actually, the Cabs have the exact same mounting holes in the top. So my old Targa rack, or others that work the same way, would also work on a Cab.

BTW, I sold the rack years ago. So if you want one, you'll have to make your own. Actually, I don't think it wouldn't be that hard to replicate.
