Front brake cooling kit install pics

Here are a few pics is case anybody is getting ready to do this mod. It went smooth but, I was unable to repack the inner wheel bearing because of fear of messing up the grease seal, the Bentley manual method of using a screwdriver may have destroyed it in the process and the P car dealer just sold his last two seals, my DE is Saturday, and as JeremyD said, it might not be too smart to be messing with it on Thursday. I also learned it is necessary to disconnect the brake line on the front caliper to remove it on a 87 Carrera, I had to bleed the brakes for the DE anyway. I also installed Hawk blue pads.

Very cool, Jack. Thanks for the excellent pics! May I ask what conditions, specifically, prompted you to go this route? The reason I ask is that my SC (reasonably light, but no featherweight) is experiencing no brake issues with track-only pads ...so far. Probably because I'm still using street rubber, but when I go to R-compounds and get faster, I'm hearing that will all change. Thanks!

Edward

Hawk Blues huh... You won't have brake dust, you'll have metal shavings, so make sure you use plenty of water when you clean them so they don't get scratched up.

You'll like the way they stop though.

Get some baling wire on the scoops as the zip ties will eventually break due to vibration and their brittle plastic nature. Use the same holes as the zip ties. Especially if you might do an off-track excursion at the DE. I have a set of these on my '72, it is a reasonable good setup for cooling but you have to clean out the debris on a regular basis as it will eventually make it way up into the center of the hub and produce a rattle (pebbles, tire strips etc.) HTH.

I've had mine on for several years now and still have the plastic zip ties - and have never picked up anything of consequence and I've done an off track excursion (actually my buddy driving my car )and just bent the lip down a little, did not break the ties...

Looks good Jack

Sebring is tough on brakes - hope this helps you get rid of your mushy pedal....

I actually replaced the supplied wimpy zip ties with some huge industrial strength versions. They will never get ripped off.

My scoops are actually metal, but these look like fiberglass. I wonder how well they hold up to off track excursions?

BTW, I hope you don't plan to drive on the street with those pads. They will eat your rotors alive. However, I find that they are not bad on rotors at the track (ie When hot).

I had a set of the original Holbert fiberglass cooling ducts that I used club racing for a number of years. When I just went under the car recently to redo all the brakes, I noticed that there was vitually nothing left of the scoops that hang of the front suspension arms. So I ordered a set from AlanJohnson that are made from aluminum. They were really nicely made....so I pulled off all the old fiberglass cooling parts (including the backing plates that funnel the air into the rotor center), and installed the new aluminum parts. Nice improvement. And they should last a long time as well.

That looks great, Jack! Have you had brake cooling issues or just being preemptive? Maybe I missed it, but what kit did you use?
I'm headed down to the DE at Sebring in the morning, so maybe I'll see you down there.

NICE looking wheelwells by the way!!
