Trading in my 3.2 Cab for a 03 996 Targa?
I own a 1988 Celebration Edition Cab that is in first rate concours condition with trophys to prove it. THAT SAID I find that I'm not really enjoying Porsche ownership this time around as much as last time. I left the pack for a short 4 year affair with a Hot Italian. I loved my Ferrari put 15,000 miles on it in 4 yrs and drove it almost every summer weekend. My 911 was purchased last year with 8900 miles in concours ready condition, It was part of a dealers private collection and that is why I paided threw the A** for it. The car now has 12,000 miles on it and I never take it out for fear of a chip, scratch, or pothole incident will devalue the car. SOOOOOO as illogical as this might sound I'm toying with trading her in on a 996 Targa. Figuring being a semi-limited edition of a "run of the mill" car. I will use it alot more. I would rather be driving than dusting. There is a local car at Cohasset Imports here in Massachusetts. Its a 2003 996 Targe Red/Tan with 4315 miles on it. They are asking $65,000. a little high in my opinion but it is in the condition I like to buy cars in. Any feedback from the Pack?

DON'T DO IT.!!!!

If you actual think you are gonna drive I would probably do it to, I also have a garage queen and it gets old, but if your not gonna drive it keep what you have, Kevin

Oh Andrew, it doesn't look like a bug. Inside joke.
I think you need a car you can drive and occassionally autocross or track. That is where the real fun is I am finding, better late than never. I would sell it and get something not as new and expensive and denitely something that has not been a garage queen. A owner that is meticulous on maintenance would be key. If you pay $65k for that, your not going to enjoy it. If you pay like $25K for a really nice Carrera 84-88), with all the extra money, you'll be able to modify if you want and maintain it should anything go bad. Heck, buy a trailer. David |
If you are going to do it, I'd try to sell your cab on your own, if you sell it to the dealer youre going to get killed twice on it. so take some time, sell it right and get as much as it's worth.
-if it were me, I'd keep the cab, drive it, don't worry about the possible chip or ding, these cars are meant to be driven, and if your car is as solid mechanically as it is cosmetically, you'll have a ton of trouble free miles to enjoy it! -you're never going to get the viceral experience of driving out of a new 996 that you get from a classic. If you want a new car, and have issues with driving an older car, than that's a different story. I've spent a lot of miles behind the wheel of all the new cars, particularally boxters, and while they are great new cars, they are totally different from our old air cooled beasts. -Good luck! -if you keep it, come for the NE fun run in october!! |
GREAT POINT DAVE!
I have also been thinking of just selling the Cab and buying a 3.2 "driver" Coupe. My problem is I have a real tough time buying a car that has to much "patina" LOL I want it to look and feel like I am the first owner. This DISEASE SUCK$!

...and the 996 isn't even a real Targa.....
|
Whats the ballpark on the trade in of the Cab? I am sure someone here would be interested.
|
This car has been pampered long enough! Turn off the computer, grab the keys, and go drive it like you stole it......you'll never look back:)

For that extra money your going to spend to buy this new(used) one, you could take the extra dough, buy a Carrera for driving and still keep the CE. I bet you would still have some good cash left over. $65k is a lot of money.

that is one gorgeous cab,
don't listen to these guys... give me 2 weeks to sell my targa & i'll give you $2k less than the dealer hang on, my wife just pinched me, i was having this terrific dream that i got a great deal on a fabulous looking cab |
Does patina bother you the same if it's your patina? That's a really nice cab. The 996 will feel very plasticky.

The 996 Targa is the better Targa (than the 993) but I'd drive the car you have.
DB 3.2 cabs need love too http://www.pelicanparts.com/pmpre/im.../TRACKPIC1.jpg |
