Lots of smoke from a 3.2 liter ('85) ??

Was wondering if anyone has had this happen...

My 85 911 idles at start fine, no smoke... can drive for miles non-stop without any smoke, if I stop due to traffic or at a long light, after take off it delivers puffs of smoke fairly continous that can travel for about 5 - 6 car lenghts behind me... the smoke is white. Any ideas on what the problem can be?

Normally when smoke appears unexpectedly the first thing you think of is a 'over fill' condition. On the other hand, you mention white smoke which sounds like condensation in the exhaust system. Have you either added oil or been in a situation where moisture could have entered the exhaust?
Good luck and please post any findings...

Sounds like the valve guides, some what common on the 3.2 ask me how I know. I have pulled down 3 engine and replaced all the valve guides in each one do to wear. Do a search I'm sure you can find more info on this problem

By the way, the engine doesn't leak any oil, all the smoke comes out of the tail pipe... I'll check some more on the valve guides issue.

drain you oil ...look at it , and tell us what it looks like.
Re-fill ...CORRECTLY.. the proper amount, dyno oil, and test drive & report back.

And just so you know, The oil level has to be checked with the car idling and on level ground at operating temp.

Although I am a little new to the Porsche community, I do know about this issue with same vintage Ferrari's. The same issue has happened with 328's mainly. Car would run fine until you stop for a bit, then a puff of white smoke after the stop light. Valve guides or rings was usually the issue. You can tell if it is the rings if you get a small amount of smoke under heavy acceleration. Have someone drive behind you (not too close)while you hit the gas so the other can see what is going on. Does the car pass emissions? How is compression? Did you check your O2 sensor? Good luck!

I would agree with lvporschepilot. If overfilled wouldn´t it smoke more or less all the time ?

If you still have the prob after checking the above, and if you're not burning large/abnormal amounts of oil, you might want to check your O2 sensor. I only say this because a couple weeks ago mine was smoking after it idled for a long period of time (during a smog check). I mean it was smoking like a mother.

So I reconnected up the O2 sensor and bingo...no smoking and passed the smog check.

Thanks for all the input...

I hope it's simple like the 02 sensor, I'll check it tonight.

Mine used to do that = no smoke at start up - but if you really got on it when you slowed down to a light it would smoke a little. Never dropped a drop of oil. oil consumption only got bad on the track - had some puffs of smoke at downshift.

Turned out to be valve guides - 6 bad valves -

I took out 3 spark plugs (2 from one bank and 1 from the other) see them attached.

Also attached is what the smoke looks like, it was a period of about 3 minutes...

By the way...

I checked the 02 sensor and it looked OK, I disconnected it and plug it back on to see if there was a loose connection, but the car behaved the same way. The wiring for the O2 sensor looked new, so the previous owner probably replaced it (i've had the car for a short time)... It makes me wonder if it was replaced correctly ??? I'll drain the oil this weekend and I'll let you know what I find...

I think you will have to prepare yourself for a top-end overhaul. That smoke is blue, which is an indication of burning oil, and the pictures of the plugs shows a wetness which is much more than what valve guides would cause.

Based on what I see from the smoke you will probably need a top end rebuild. Valve guides are most certainly the problem here.
Good luck -

Anybody know of an independent mechanic in the San Diego CA area who can do the top end rebuild.... How much should I expect to pay?
