Would you guys buy this and restore it? If so, how much do you think it's worth, he's asking $4000 obo? There is a lot of rust but if it's going to be stripped down do you think it's worth the trouble or would it be better to buy one in good condition for the normal price.

Restoration? Probably not. Parts car? Quite possibly. The MFI alone in good condition is worth $...then the 915 transaxle with 7:31 Ring & Pinion...the engine. All depends.

Just searched and found both posts but they really didn't offer up any info on my question. I'm in the mood to build another car (never built a Porsche, just beetles) and I"m wondering if it's worth the trouble on this one if the price is right. Rust on a beetle isn't that bad to repair but I don't know about Porsche.

The nice thing about a beetle is that you can remove the body from the floor pan. The 911 is a uni-body construction and rust repair can get expensive quickly. It is easy to get over your head on one of these cars. If you have some experience with welding and body work then you may be fine.

Patch panels are available but you have to ask how much are you willing to put in to the car. There is a lot of work to do on that car. How are your skills? the rear torsion bar area should best be repaired with a jig. Can you make one? There are many factors about fixing the car, not just rust.

In the end it will be easier and cheaper to buy one that is in good condition. Of course, if you just like building these types of projects (like me) then proceded and may your cutting wheels, welding arcs and paint gun work well!

Porsches of this era are just glorified VWs, so you may be able to do it. But it seems to me that if you're calling it "trouble" and not "fun," this is not the right car for you.

To restore, you will need a set of front fenders. $900 is a typical price for the pair. $1100 is a typical price for front pan replacement. The fact that other random places are rusted through could mean that a lot of the chassis won't pass the "ice pick test." So figure another $1,000 for just basic rust repair patches. $1,000 would put the rear quarters back to stock. Fix doors & body surface rust... $1200(?) Now you're ready for paint... $2-5,000. Then you can tacke the brakes and other running gear issues.

Can you do the labor yourself? If so, you could have a decent car for less than $11/12K.

Thanks. My welding and body work is above average but I don't want to end up spending 20k restoring it. I was curious if you guys had a quick answer rather than me spending hours researching costs. I think I'll keep looking for one to build that has fewer rust issues. Thanks again.

I agree with the above, offer $3k for it as a parts car, if the motor and tranny are good they are worth the $3k.

The problem with this car is it has been so bastardize. Probably with all fiberglass. Rear flares wrong, front fenders(too much flare)wrong, big aftermarket whale tail, 74 rear bumber, and it appears like a 74 front bumber. No telling what the motor is really like. If it was unmolested 73E then it may be worth it but not this bastard. And I take umbrage at techweenie's comment that a 911 was "glorified VW's". The 356 may have been but not the 911.
