930 leaking oil/smoking

My 78 930 had the airfilter housing pulled and a filter placed on top of the intake by the p.o. The last couple weeks, oil has been blowing out the breather hose that starts down by the turbo. It leaks onto the headers and burns. No change noted in oil pressure. Changed filter and oil. Is this excessive compression leaking past the rings and into the crankcase? Or some other problem? Any ideas?

Sounds like you put too much oil in there.

Did you check the oil level when the car is at *operating temperature* during *idle* on a flat surface?

THe breather hose is in front of the car while the turbo is in the rear of the car??? Are you talking about the oil supply to the turbo?

No, it's not the oil supply. It is a 3/4 hose that starts Just in front of the intercooler pipe (towards the front of the car) to the left of the Distrib. It normally runs up to the airbox but MM disconnected it when the engine was rebuilt. It is capped off with a small K&N type filter. I believe it is a vent for the crankcase. I believe I have worn rings causing excess pressure in the crankcase. Does that sound correct?

The oil vent you are referring to is the turbo sump vent line. In a stock configuration, it runs up to the stock air box, I believe. Check to K&N to make sure it is not clogged up, otherwise it could cause oil vapor pressure to build up and cause oil to get past the oil seals in the turbocharger.

Checked the line, it is not clogged up. Can't see very far into the fitting, but it looks ok as well.

You might want to check the sump lines that connect to the sump, the fitting at the base of the turbocharger, or the areas where the tubes are welded to the sump. I have heard these may crack from vibration over time and may leak.

The sump is pictured as item #21 with the attached pic.

I'll check, but the oil is leaking out the sump vent line on top the motor.
