Definative Gearbox Thread?

Can anybody point me to a good gearbox thread discussing the versions, what they fit, the merits of one over another, the ones to avoid, modifications and any other relevant installation advice?

Otherwise, lets make this the Uber Thread :)

Some may have read that my sporto looks like it's begining to fail. I'm getting the impression (and Grady Clay backs it up) that my 2.7RS spec engine is probably going to ruin anything other than a custom 925 sporto box. Given it'll cost the same to build/convert to a 915, I think this may be the smarter option.

I built my engine... time for a new challenge! There must be heaps of you who have built your gearboxes and converted sportos to manuals...

I'd love to hear from you all!

All,
Here is the link to this morning’s post:
Sporto's Ring Gear Shat Itself...

John,

While I agree a 915 is the most suitable transmission for your ’69 2.7RS, I will play “devil’s advocate” and lead you through the best 925 process. I’m going to rely on our fellow Pelicans to argue the counter point 915. Everyone will benefit from the exercise.

Best,
Grady

I'd also like some opinion on running a 901/911 transmission to save having t do the metal work on the rear of the tunnel...

Oh c'mon guys... there soooo many opinions on this board!

So far I have leads on

1. A rebuilt magnesium 915 4 speed
2. An aluminium 915 5 speed requiring synchros
3. An unknown 925 (sporto) that I'll factor a rebuild for, and is cheap!

I put a 911 in my '73 with the the amplified 3.2L motor - just 'cuz it's lighter and has the racing style shift pattern which I like (I don't use it much in traffic).

i saved this 915 thread a while ago... pretty informative as far as rebuild etc, so i'm sure somewhere in there is a discussion of what's desirable or not. here it is...... all 16 pages of it ;)

also, i believe Noah has a write up of his rebuild (mentioning the good stuff vs. the bad stuff) in the technical articles

Thanks Dave, great stuff!
