Dash backdate question.

Hey guys, I have a 76 project I'm doing a backdate on. The PO owner hacked up the dash pretty good with an aftermarket ventilation system. I'm going to have to cover some holes/openings that shouldn't be there.

Anyways, since I'm backdating the car seems like it makes sense to backdate the lower dash since its already hacked up.

My big question is....Do you know if the one piece knee pad from the early cars will fit in the same footprint as the two piece kneepad?

I saw some other threads on dash backdates but nothing addressed this specifically.

Thanks for any feedback. If you have any other ideas of retro style aftermarket parts I could use that would be appreciated as well.

Did you have to do anything special to install it? The one piece looks like its the same size as the two piece its just not got the ash tray built in.

I did it when I first got my car 10 years ago so my memory isn't perfectly clear, but for some reason I cut off the studs on the knee pad, maybe they didn't line up correctly or something. Not really sure anymore lol. Everything else seems to line up nicely though.

Cool, what about mid to late 60's one piece. Visually it looks like it would fit.

I was under the impression the one piece knee pads came from swb cars.?

When you say "one piece kneepad", I assume you are referring to the 2-piece vs the 3-piece (2 + ashtray) kneepad? SWB cars have the 2-piece pads. LWB cars (69-73) have the 3-piece pads, and since your car is also a LWB, is there a reason you want to use the SWB 2-piece pads (e.g.; ashtray delete)? It's obviously your choice, I just wanted to point out what would be correct for a LWB.

FYI, the design of the knee pad changed slightly with the introduction of the G-Series (74 impact bumper). The stud holes are in the same place so they can be attached, but the later knee pads do not fit the early dash trim properly - they leave a several mm gap. If you look at PET, the same part number is listed from '69 to '85, but there is a difference (I have tried both). There is a thread about this over on the Early911SRegistry site.

Thanks frankc. Yes, the 3 piece is what I was looking for. I like the cleaner look of no ashtray. I've been staring at a ton of pictures of backdated dashboards and none of the ashtrays seem to line up right. In some cases it ruins the overall look in my opinion.

We put the one piece knee pad on mine( no ashtray) and it worked fine.
