Dual Exhaust or Single

I have an 86' Cab and I will be upgrading the exhaust system soon. Has anyone installed a muffler w/dual outlet and cut the valance? Will I gain much HP going through this change?

All advice welcome!

I just did this recently to my 86. The exhaust has a dual out but it can be capped to be a single. I have run it both ways and I seriously doubt it is different either way as far as hp.

It does however have a lot more growl with the dual so I left it on. I also added a euro premuffler and although I did no dyno believe it added a few more horseys.

It definitely added to the sound.

If you get a nice stainless model....take the valance off completely.

The PO cut my valence to put on a dual outlet......real purdy like, so I bought a new valence and cut and capped that fake-O dual deal.

one thing to consider is if your car is sitting low you won't have 1 side to favor when you creep up driveways at an angle as I do. You'll soon end up with a flat spotted tailpipe. I have Ben's M&K 1 in 1 out model and a cat bypass and I can't beleive the sound - raucous. Ben also told me on his models the 2 outs don't make much difference on his models.

noise not hp

put some single wt. cardboard up against he cut out and trace - cut that out and then trace onto the bumper/rocker sheet metal. use shears or a nibbler tool to cut out. Grind/sand the edges round/prime/paint. et voila!

Yes ray is right 2 outs really don't help that much if any on most makers of exhaust

I like the Dansk twin out. You will need it if you go to a heavily modified engine. If the engine is only slightly moded (< 25% HP increase) then you probably won't gain much except the look.

Best regards,

If you want more HP, save your money. If you want to be loud and obnoxious and deprive others of their reasonable right to peace and quiet, go for it

I had a dansk dual out on my 1987 Cabriolet with a dansk euro premuffler and loved it - great sound - nice pick me up with a Steve Wong Chip - nice burble at idle - wailed like a banshee at WOT. Just loafing around town actually sounded pretty civil - no resonance - and could talk to my passenger (and cell phone with the top up) - With the B & B I have on there now - can't make the same comments.

The muffler and either 1 or 2 out is a personal thing.

Find a car to ride in that has what turns you on and then decide. Don't compare your engine and cam with another engine that has a cam w/overlap and higher compression.

Enjoy the adventure.

Jeremy,
Nice car, but I would imagine that license plate doesn't attract too many ladies
