After just getting my car back from being stolen, I am quite paranoid about it getting stolen again. What are the best options to keep my baby safe? I was going to get an engine cutoff switch eventually as she is a part time track car. Can this also be an effective theft deterrent? If not, what is a good alarm system to use? Would it be good to use both?
Thanks, Justin

I've been thinking about a remote cut off switch to the fuel pump. I'm just concerned about any electrical gremlins that might develop because of some electrical phenomenom in the system. I used to use a cut off to the fuel pump in other cars with carbs, the car would travel 500' and stall, what does a thief do now in the middle of an intersection?

I have the same question. I have a 74 so the fuel pump is not on a relay or fuse. I was thinking about installing a simple switch to interupt the current to the fuel pump. I'm not sure if I'm suppose interupt the positive or negative?
Anyone???? |

A battery or fuel cut off would be my choice. When is the last time anyone payed attention to a car alarm. Most people(including me) just get annoyed.

A layered approach is best. Layer the sh it out of it if you're doing the install.. all imo.
If you figure the crook knows what he's doing feed him some bait so that he can beat feet easily. Then shoot him in the middle of traffic like Mike said. That is the best technique according to a NYC PD Auto guy's words to me informally. They dump it as quick as possile. And if he knows what he's doing he knows about killing the fuel pump relay/ like all alarm installers do, knows how to jump the starter/ like all wrenches do, and how to jump the CD box like he was told. that said.. many of these guys are 5th string in the brains dept. They know one or 3 acts then they're as confused as a 2nd grader. The best is when they bring a hottie into the same joint that gets busted 1-3yrs historically.. no matter who owns it.

I can build them strong enough to last longer than a rebuilt engine. And figure in a 2min relay jump just in case something strange happens.

Hi,
I have a Clifford System III (not avail anymore). Was put in when car was new back in '84. I love/hate it. Love: Keypad - can't scan the code... Been very reliable. It has Shock/vibration sensors as well as cutoff (not sure anymore what it cuts). Also has a battery back-up in case the battery is cut - but there is a solinoids lock on the front bonnet that needs to be released. Hate: It has two horns. One in the front bonnet, one in the cabin. My dad bought the car new and the horns scare me to death. I now have the car and still hate the screeming sirens. I believe they are 120db horns. The car has had it's small side window(a-piller) broken only once a long time ago. I wish they still made something like this. Some of the new alarms have the ability to beep you within a few hundred yards... BTW, Hooking up a capacitor system (50,000 volts) the door handles does wonders! Just remeber to turn it off before you grab the handle! Dave

Hi,
I've not personally done this - yet.. But I do know that it has been done. I do know someone that has done this. I can ask, but I hold no responsibility with the outcome. It works very much like a stun-gun. Does not take too much voltage up front, the 12v battery can be used. You do need some capacitors, a calculator (Need to produce high voltage with low current (amps kill people, not voltage)). Just need good insulated wire and a good arm/disarm device. It is not fun being hit with 50,000+ volts. Dave

Hi,
Not going to go into the whole story, but I know how it feels and more. The carrera has always been fine, but not so fortunate with an Infiniti... I'll get the details, but it'll take a few days. Dave Dave

Ignition cutoff
See Tech article which is a simple way to ground the coil, using cable lead which already goes to the dash area, for the tacho.
This may only apply to certain generation cars where the wiring applies. http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Mult_ignition_cutoff/Mult_ignition_cutoff.htm

I can't imagine that a thief would carry a key for an engine cutoff switch. It doesn't seem like there are more than a few dozen cars in the area with them.
