Both US and Euro cars were 3.2 litre. However, Euro had a 10.3:1 compression ratio and 231 bhp over US 217. Other differences were brighter headlights, added transmission cooler, smaller rear bumber guards, side blinkers, and slighty lighter weight. Americanization of Euros -- with smog and other laws -- may mediate some of these differences. Depends on circumstances of import and regulations in state titled.
I don't see as a rule why one would cost more to maintain. Mine has not anyway.

euro 1988 did not include a transmission cooler for the g-50 - just the pre 1987 915 trannys. Not many euros after 1986.

I think a euro carrera will be my next car for a track car. Built in cooler - see if I can find a non-sunroof coupe - simple interior. nice engine with a little higher compression.
