Show me your early car with H4's!

And tell me why you love it, or why you don't. I'm thinking about it.

Thanks

Well, for one H4s should be much brighter than the sealed beam lights the early US cars were stuck with. Stinky and my coupe still have 'em... but eventually I'll trade out for H4s.

I like both looks. Stinky has chrome rings that are in decent shape, they need cleaning and buffing, as the chrome has some pitting. Hopefully it's not bad. The coupe's rings suck and are in poor shape. I wouldn't mind finding some sort of housing that would work with the old style rings that uses more modern bulbs.

ETA: I probably will wire up the headlights with relays before I switch to H4s. That should help with old, tired wires, and bring a little brightness back.

I went with non-euro H-4's and upgraded with relays. What a difference over conventional sealed beams. Looks great and especially if you like the wide chrome lens housing. You won't be sorry.

Darryl,

Where did you find those? I might like to go with something like that, and keep the wide chrome rings if they clean up nicely...

1983 SC with Euro H4s (that have small 'pedestrian warning city lights' that tie into parking lights)

I know there are H4s that would fit my original headlight surrounds but I like the newer H4 style and look.

These are h5s from an 87 us 911 but I can barely tell the diff.

Its the same look, I like the "unshrouded" look. To me it totally changes the character of the car!

Matt, I obtained these from our host. They pop right in in place of the sealedd beams with replaceable H-4 bulbs. Darryl

Found some H4 replacements for 7" sealed beams over at www.rallylights.com. I figure since the rings on my car will look pretty good when I clean them up, why go with the euro conversion?

When I get to the shop, I'll take and post a picture of an early car with one Euro H-4 and one stock "sugar scoop" installed.
The improvement in looks is striking, IMO.
Euro H-4's have the profile of the Spyder/356 era, that gives the car that distinctive "Porsche" look.
The 55/100watt bulbs are helpful too!

I also went with non-Euro H-4s and kept the original sugar scoops and chromed rings.

Even "without" relays, the standard 55/60 bulbs are a hugh improvement over my old sealed beams (as in...gee, I can see now at night!). You can always go to hotter bulbs and relays if you're still not satisfied.

I'll put Euro H-4s on my 1984, but on the early cars, I still prefer the sugar scoops.

Good call. I'm sorry I don't have a close-up, but I've got them on mine. You can kinda see them on this pic...

I prefer the look of H4's on a 911, in my opinion the lines
of the car flow better. I have Sucro relays in both my 911's,
and run 80/100w bulbs. The night visibility is fantastic !
80W illuminates so well, I rarely need the high beam 100w !

The SC

The 70E w/ factory Sugar scoops

The 70E w/ H4's....ahhhh much better

I changed from suger scoops to H4's on mine. It just makes the car flow better.Plus, running 80/100w bulbs makes night driving alot more fun, and safer.

Ya got me! Didn't want to get into the H1 versus H4 thing. I just wanted to show off my new lights and at least the shape is the same.

The only thing worse than sugar scoops to me are sugar scoops with painted rings on an early car. That's what I replaced with the H1s. Luckily the original chrome rings came with the car so I'll have the original lights stashed.
