Too big to fail

Need 911 rear suspension subframe education
I have my engine out right now (more on that later) and while I was doing some general cleanup, I noticed that I have some separation and spot weld failure on the driver's side where the shock mount 'frame' (for lack of a better word) attaches to the side of the car. Imagine the frame as an inverted "U", it's cracking at the very bottom. I have pix, but they're at safe at home, in the camera.
I'm going to seam-weld the area, but as I was looking things over, this whole design just doesn't make sense. Why is there a gap between this subframe and the rest of the body? It seems like it would be a good idea to at least tie the two parts together with some welded-on straps or something. I did some homework and found this picture from an old thread. I understand what is going on here, but mine cracked at the bottom of where the lower-left hand is pointing, longitudinally with the car. I didn't find any references to connecting the 'horseshoe' in the middle. Tyson? ![]()

Thom, I'd spend some time and put in some additional reinforcement while the motor is out.

Thom, my DP car came with gussets on the rear shock towers and the corner area like on the picture you posted.
Do you still have the 935 mirrors for sale? I sent you an email but not sure you received it. Thanks. Quinn kycarguy@yahoo.com

Yeah, I'd love to put in some extra reinforcement while the motor is out, and extend the cage to the shock towers, and lay up a carbon fiber monococque...
... but I'd also like to drive it again, hopefully by this weekend! The crack:

I think that if you only pick one of those things you can be done by the weekend. It's only Tue. I expect to see a running cf monocoque by Sat morn. Git-er-dun!

The rear parcel shelf isn't much of a structural member, if at all. So it's kind of irrelevant.
What will help the most is welding in trianguler braces on the bottom corners to further strengthen the attachment of the rear shock tower crossmember to the longitudinals. BTW, the welds in the above pic were not done by me. I have my own methods of reinforcement, and I'd like to think my welds are prettier than those. ![]()
