Handy Hints

Here are a couple of hints I have gleaned from Popular Mechanics that may be of some use to you fellow DYI Pelicans.

You cant find the source of oil leaking from your motor...
First, spray the area with Easy Off Oven Cleaner. (In most cases its cheaper than automotive cleaners. ) Then hose the area down and let it dry. Then spray on some aerosol foot powder. The oil will stain a path in the powder, which you can follow back to the source.

Got a stubborn nut you can't remove...
Std practice is to cut the nut off with an oxy-acetlylene torch, or cut the nut with a chisel. Try heating the nut and touching a candle to the exposed thd'd area. The wax will melt and flow into the thds, acting as a lubricant.

That is all for now...

Heres one.
After heating up the nut and wrenching a bit. Be careful not to pick up the hot end of the wrench after taking a short break.

Not that I've ever done that myself;) .

Be careful using easy-off, it doesn't like paint and aluminium doesn't like it.

Anybody gonna post the Milk of Magnesia tip?

Easy-off contains caustic or sodium hydroxide (think dip tank) which is a known solvent for aluminum and magnesium. I wouldn't even get it close to a 911 engine.

When your heating up the bolt, as it gets red just grab the little O2 lever and smoke your problem away. If that doesn't thrill you, buy a plasma....now that's some serious fun!

God I love tools that arc and spark...... Brian
