Exclamation Need Steering Wheel Help!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I drove in to work today in the 911.

All systems normal until about 5 miles from the office. I noticed that if you press on the top of the steering wheel (towards the dash) it has a bit of play in it now. The wheel will rock about 1/4" (maybe I'm overestimating). It only does it at the top of the wheel (tried it with the wheels turned in the garage).

I pulled off the horn pad and the nut appears to be tight. Finger tight anyhow. When looking at the wobble while the horn pad is off, it looks like the problem is inside the steering column (ie. the wheel does not appear to move behind the nut).

What the heck is wrong? Maybe something fell out the bottom of the steering rack? I'm not sure where to start looking and don't know if I should be driving it like this. I need to get it home from work.

Suggestions, advice? Help?

Hey Steve, I just had this problem too... here's a great thread for ya....

Steering column bushing ordered...any tips?

ps: Go ahead and order the bushing, but it won't hurt to continue driving until it arrives.

Thanks guys! My Panic. Post. Search. Retract. method is probably not the best.

Pari, I found your thread referenced. Perhaps Charlie's quote is the best:

Pari,

Do a couple DE's and you'll replace that bushing in no time

BTW: When that bushing decides to give up the ghost, YOU'LL KNOW!!
For me it only took 3 DEs.

$300 is steal for the part, it wound only cost me $100 in gas to get it!!
