Fuchs wheels refinish - DIY job?
Did a forum and net search but couldn't find complete answers to my question. Maybe my search technique is poor. Planning to buy an SC or Carrera, notice that most original cars seem to have Fuchs in Black monochrome. I like the "two-tone" silver/black style (not sure if that's the official description).
Is removal of the black paint on the spokes a DIY job? I was under the impression that the Black was an anodization, but it sounds like it's actually black paint over anodization. Am I better off having this done by one of the recommended wheel refinishing shops? Anyone know of a reputable shop in the SF Bay area where I could schedule the job to minimize the car's downtime? |

Wiedeman's - TOP notch (spelling?)
Wheel Enhancement is another option. That being said, you can do ALL of the work yourself if you want to. Except anodizing if you want that. As for painting the centers and polishing the lips and / or spokes, you can do it. LABOR intensive depending on your current condition. I did mine and am happy, but it was a lot of labor ![]() Here is a shot, not close up, but it should give you an idea... -Chris

Don't know about the bay area, but search this site for Al Reed in Anaheim, CA. You will see that his work is highly regarded.

I just bought a set of wheels from Jason Cullen (another pelican) and he used Al Reed to do the refinishing. I had him do anodized spokes and lips with black satin accents and they turned out awesome. I don't have any pics here at work but you can PM me and I can take a few shots tonight if you want.

There are a ton of threads on this subjects, here is just one example. Try searching again and you will no doubt find more info that you want. 89911 has a very good thread that should provide you all the info you need.
To answer your question, yes, you can do it all. I have done it, it's a LOT or work, but fun if you enjoy that sort of thing. Most people will scream, Al Reed (do a search)...that's not a bad option either. Enjoy! v/r Wayne C. 83 SC |

I went to the trouble of shipping my wheels from Chicago to Al Reed.....polished lips and petals with black webbing. He then powdercoated the entire wheel so I wouldn't have to mess around with polishing. Two years later, they are still perfect, along with the fact that he is the ultimate gentleman to do business with. I found that if I took the boxed wheels (two wheels per box, one smaller box within a slightly larger one for good protection) directly to a UPS center rather than a UPS store or Mailboxes etc, the cost was $20 per box rather than $40 per box.

If you are in the Bay Area I would call Rite Way Wheel in Walnut Creek. I think the owner is Jose and they polished my Fuchs which they came out really well - the prices are reasonable also.

Thanks code7rpd.
Walnut creek is close to me. Do you have photos you can post, pm, or email? Do you recall cost? kjerns@comcast.net |

I believe I paid $100 per wheel for a full polish and it would have been $50 a wheel to polish the lips and paint the centers black. I will send you pics tonight or tommorrow.

I second the Riteway in Walnut Creek, CA recommendation. He can't snodize, but if you want polished lips and black centers, Jose does a great job and a reasonal price.
