HELP! Top End Steering Bushing?

Guys,

How does one get a new steering bushing onto the steering column completely straight?

I tried hammering it in place with a larger socket over the column to try to make it go in straight, but it's gone in a bit crooked.

As you can see, the old bushing was completely worn out, causing violent vibration at speed

Here's the new one in place, ready for insertion:

Advice?

you might need to remove the old one to get the new one to fit.

Hrmm, I read that once the new one slides in place properly, it should displace the old one further back into the shaft.

My problem is actually getting the new one to slide into the metal housing completely straight. It keeps going in on a slight angle and therefore doesn't go in fully, resulting in it popping back out when the car is driven.

I want to fix this once and for all

Tried using a deep socket and hammering it in lightly, but still goes in slightly skewed :(

you probaly don't want to hear this but when I did mine about 2weeks ago I just pushed it in place with my thumbs. I grabbed the clamshell for leverage and shoved. It hurt a little but no pain no gain. My old bushing was in such bad shape though I removed it with a shop-vac.

Merv

I've got the metal sleeve that replaces the shagged plastic bush. I ordered by accident a few years back. You slip it over the shaft and tap it down btw the shaft and the bearing. The plastic bushes will continue to fail. Free if you f*k your current project :)

Otherwise try using a punch to tap all around the new bearing gently so it seats square. Or go get some correct diameter and length pipe to use as a drift.

WydRyd, that part is the "bearing" not the "bushing". The replacement procedures are very different. Bushing takes just a few minutes and the bearing will take many hrs. U need to do a search, DO NOT hit that bearing with a hammer.

So, what you're saying is that I've bought the wrong part? Sheeeesh!

Is it the black thing on this page?
