Gurus...I could really use some help here
I was out driving around this afternoon and it was going great.
A little history...I took it in for someo electrical issues and it wass gone for a very long time. The car was running very rich when I picked it up, but I did not want to spend any more cash on repairs so I figured I woiuld take care of that later. When I was driving it was going fast and strong down the highway and back roads. I then went into a residential arwa and went 25 MPH for about 10 minutes stopping and going...the car starting running pretty bad, so I figured I better get out on the main road. Before I got the the main road it starting backfiring and bucking, so I took off fast down the road and it was having a very hard time holding speed, so I pulled down a back road and it backfired two more times and then died. I tried to turn it over and it caught backfired and stopped. Now it only turns over and no catching. I pulled the plugs and they were very black so I replaced all of them and tried to start it again. Nothing....I sparyed some staring fluid into the air box and it would catch and once it backfired again. But it would not stay running. The fueld pump is running and the CD box is screaming as it should (I even tried the spare I keep in the car, but nothing). ANy thoughts? Thanks as always!   |
When you say it backfired do you think it was a intake backfire or an exhaust backfire? If it was a intake backfire you probably have a blown intake box, this is common on CIS cars. Do you know if the intake box has a popoff valve? These sometimes come unglued when a backfire occurs, leaving a huge vacumn leak and the car won't start.

I took the cover off the box, it didn't look like anything ws wrong with it...I am pretty sure it was an exhaust backfire

could the cold start valve be the culprit?
|
what makes you think it was running rich? could be your coil or a clogged fuel filter maybe. its not out of gas, right?
|
re-gap points and plugs also check the fuzzy advance and the idlle mixture
|
My mechanic said it was running rich and it would blow some black smoke when I left from a light or stop sign.
What the heck is the fuzzy advance? |
it is not out of gas, I thought maybe the gauge went bad, although it has been fine, so I put a couple of gallons in it.
|
could the rich condition actually cause the timing to advance?
