James Dean Hollywood Ca 9/30 Meet
Hey all , it's Maltese Falcon- just using TRE Cup's address.
Friday the 30th of Sept. is the 50th anniversary of the James Dean crash. He left L.A. from 1219 N. Vine St. Hollywood that morning . That was the former site of Competition Motors (John von Neumann) which is now a construction project. I've set up that morning with the construction supervisor (Jan) to give us a 15 minute "Drive up and photo-op ", so anyone in the area in a Porsche should get down there. Bring a camera ! You want to enter LaMirada St. properly (from Cahuenga Bl.) at 8:15 am- facing east. Cahuenga is one block west of Vine St. DO not enter LaMirada St. from Vine St. it is too narrow ! We will then take some photos ( a 50th only happens once), and depart at 8:30 am. This is next to a construction site, so please respect the contractor, the parking on LaMirada is also "No parking anytime", I think 15 minutes should be OK. After 8:30 the big trucks roll back in, and we must be gone ! LaMirada St. is one block south of Fountain Ave. and one block north of Lexington ( 2 blocks north of Santa Monica Bl.) When you arrive a lady named Barrett will be assisting parking for us |

It would be nice if some of you Calif. Pelican could travel to the site of the crash and take photos next to the very classy memorial at that location.
The location is at: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tips/getAttraction.php3?tip_AttractionNo==2791 I was passing thur on a motorcycle trip several years ago and stopped for a little tribute.......Post pic's ifyou can.....Thax.

Well my SBC DSL just got back in gear and here are a couple of pics from our small group of 50TH anniv. Dean fans . This was over at the old Comp Motors, from where James started his infamous road trip to Salinas on Friday, 9-30-55. Thanks to TRE Cup (Dave) for bringing that awesome black 550 (Beck ?) with the '55 black plates- you stopped traffic on Vine ! Also thx. to Chucks6 for bringing your orange beast and the camera work (please post soon !) . Porscheone Chuck ( let's see those pix) and brother Henry, and Karl K. for your camera work also.
The contractor gal Beritt kept the 18 wheelers away for 15 minutes--way cool We held a short prayer for James at LaMirada and Vine St., did some bench racing and then drove our P cars to work---a good day in Hollywood. This ground will be part of an adjacent Church when finished. PS, this is where the "Champion spark plug James Dean " poster was shot back in the day. Marty

My guess is it's the pic's title that's the problem.

I'll get the pictures posted tomorrow.
My brother was in the group photograph that was in Saturday's edition of the L.A. Times. Look for the "Yield" sign. That is the spot we were told, where "Little Bastard" ended up. More on the journey tomorrow.

Holy crap! Did all those people make the "Dean Pilgrimage"? The junction looks like a busy place, when I saw it about 15 years ago it looked different. There is more asphalt and no light poles then, just a lonely little intersection.

Bob, the photo would be : 930 is facing east -parked on LaMirada, which would be the intersecting side street/ northern end of the property. Black 550 and orange 9146 are on the sidewalk (west side of street) of Vine St. which runs north and south. The driveway to 1219 N. Vine (not in pic) was used to drive the cars onto the sidewalk. I have a small remnant of the cement driveway for a desk ornament! There is a pawn shop right off LaMirada , from where we took most of the pics.
Of interest: a few of the old time residents saw the photo-op and came out to talk to us about Comp Motors, Dean and the old Ranch Market accross the street. Marty

Hey Marty
Yes, the silver 550 came by about 10-15 minutes after you and Dave left. The other Chuck was there and was able to snap a few pics before he had to leave on his way to Ensenada (Baja California to you non Cali's). The owner said it was based on a '56 and that he tried to make it as "correct" as possible. I dunno how correct it was, but it sure was nice. I asked him if I could post some pics, so here they are; The photos do not want to upload. I get a message that says they are to large, though they are the same size as the first one I posted. I'll try again tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Note: I did this backward, as the photos in my previous post were taken after these photos.
Henry and I arrived at 8:20 A.M. and found Marty and Dave already there. Chuck with the super clean signal orange 914-6 arrived a little later. My brother and I made the trip to Hwy. 46 & 41. I will post all the pics we took along the way, as we followed the same/approx. route that the Little "B" did 50 years ago. I will post those tomorrow, as I have to resize them all. 1219 Vine Hollywood, CA Former site of Competition Motors Looking west ![]() Looking south ![]() Full view west ![]() One clean Little "B" ![]() Marty ![]() Dave Henry (Looking north)
