Need painting advice

I picked up an 80 SC roller (was a track car) over the weekend and have grand dreams of making a nice car out of it by pulling parts off a wrecked 84 I was given some time ago. the car is pretty much rust-free but I've got multiple surfaces on multiple panels.

Body and fenders: combination of factory color, racecar respray and primer, need to pull and fill some dents, patch one small rust area.

Decklid, doors and hood: good factory color, some deep scratches.

The car is already fully stripped, need to pull a few more things, so I can paint EVERYTHING.

Here's what I need help on. It's going to be 964 seafoam green, a metallic.

Would you:
Lightly run a DA over everything and use the factory base
or
Bring it down to baremetal as much as you can get (DA? or media blast? or stripper?) and start from scratch
or
????

When painting, would you:
Paint each piece individually and then assemble
or
Paint each piece individually, then assemble, then lay down a finish coat
or
???

Some pics of the car.

On Question 1: I would use the factory base if intact and in good condition.

Steve,

Seafoam green, yuck. How about Mexico blue? Now there is a color.

I second whatever Rick says. Guy knows like everything 911.
No joke.

You will want to paint the jambs and then assemble the car to paint it. Especially with a metallic, you want the car in one piece so the sheen will all work the same way.

Gotten this same advice, like it.

Does it make ANY sense to paint all removeable panels off the car, especially backsides, nooks, crannies while off the car, then assemble loosely and paint again?

Example: Hood, decklid are red and black now. I'd like the undersides to be seafoam green. Seems to me it would make sense to get all these panels one color, especially in hard to get but visible places once on the car.

Then, as you say, assemble and paint so that you've got continuous color/sheen.

Thoughts?

This is a once in a car lifetime deal taking 5 different color panels and making a nice car out of all of them.

TIA.

You don't like seafoam green? I agree, Mexico blue is beautiful, but the wife requested the seafoam to match her red hair. I've learned not to argue in such matters.

do yourself a huge favor... don't try metallics.. you wont be happy. Way too many variables if you are new to painting.

Hey! Nice car! Looks like you haven't wasted any time in the preparation process. I'll be curious to see how it comes along.

I would paint the removable parts off the car, paint the shell and jambs, etc, let it sit in the warm sun for a few days while you do any color sanding, then assemble, using a couple layers of wide, blue painter's tape on all of the edges. Get an extra set of hands for assembling to reduce the likelihood of dinging/scratching something. Oh, and for your first paint job, use a solid color in single stage. My fave is PPG CLV. Figure out how much paint you need, then buy more than that, so that it's all from the same 'batch'. I used about 3 quarts of base color when I painted my 911.
