Thanks for the measurements and images. Sounds like you diagnosed the leak, very good attention to detail. Clearly you need to address the support ring on the side cover issue. This was a problem from day one. Someone (Performance Products? Ray Litz?) made a machined aluminum repair part for the support ring. It bolted in place of the original. That was in the early ‘70s and I haven’t seen one since. What is the cost and availability of the side cover? Best, Grady

The orientation of the vent tube is important. If you take it out, you will notice that the tube itself is cut at a 45 degree angle. If it is put in facing the wrong direction, it will pick up fluid thrown up by the ring gear and the fluid will seep out of the vent hole.

Right on. About a year ago someone was chasing his vent weeping and it turned out a previous owner (PO) had replaced the casting with one from a 914. A significant difference is the vent is positioned on the opposite side (away from the starter) and oriented to pick up oil when installed in a 911. Best, Grady
