Removing targa trim
 

I have some rust along the targa rear window.
How do I remove this trim bit? Just pry gently with a skrewdriver?

YOu have to take it all apart to get to that trim piece. First remove the stainless targa bar. Don't forget the 4 nuts inside the wheel well and 12 small screws under the rear targa seal. Then you have to remove the rear window. Cut the seal and pull out glass. Be careful of the rear window defroster wires. Once this is all out, you can take out the trim. There are 5 small screws on top (under the window seal) and two speed nuts on studs inside the wheel well.

Btw, reinstalling the rear targa glass can be very difficult. Use caution before you start this project.

I've never done this before, but my understanding is that there are two nuts on each side, up in the wheel wells. You have to remove the nuts to remove the Targa bar. There are also several screws along the edges. Do a search on the Board, and you'll find threads on removing the Targa bar. On a 30 year old car, you might consider soaking the nuts in PB Blaster for a day or two before trying to remove them.

While you have the Targa bar off, you might consider painting it.

Or it could be like mine where the nuts on the bottom where stripped and rusted and I had to cut the thing off....only to find out you can't get chrome ones anymore. Black ones are only made and they are $200 a side and have to come from Germany. DOH!!!!!!!

Oh yeah, that little rust you see there is just a hint to what lies beneath. There will be a lot of rust back there. So unless you are prepared to deal with a mess, I would say leave it until you are going to paint the entire car.

Kevin - really? There will be much more rust underneath? I have the same issue but I was going to stripp her down this winter and repaint her. Looks like I will be doing some fill work as well?

To JUST remove that piece, you do not need to remove the bar cover. There are 4 nuts in the wheel well. The smaller ones are the ones related to the trim piece. The problem is, it's connected to the rest of the trim that surrounds the back window (which I think is glued down). It has a little flex so you could probably bend it out of the way to weld/sand, etc, but it won't ever be the same.

I agree that removing the targa bar and window is the proper way to repair the rust. BUt I'm answering your original question ;)

Yeah I just did mine, and that was all that was shown on the edge. When I pulled off the rusted twisted trim I was a little shocked at all the holes. I had to grind, treat with Por15 and then do a little welding and filling to make it solid again. I didn't take any pictures so I can't show it....Sorry.

Also, there is no way to take off the trim without removing the glass. The targa bar cover is trivial.

Hmm, maybe I should hold this repair off another year, until I have got more funds to do it proper. It has been this way since I bought the car 2 years ago and it hasn´t got any worse, not much anyway.

Magnus - I maybe in the same boat - seems like a big project but it could be fun. It would take some time but it would make for a cool pelican get together. 10 parties all toll.
1) the strip down party - removal of all the hardware (rear wind shield to be done by outside guy)
2) the engine drop party
3) the tape off party
4) the bead blast party
5) the sand - fill - sand party
6) the primer party
7) the base coat party
8) the top coat party
9) the engine refit party
10) the reassembly party

That is going to be about a 2 week party. Mine still isn't over.

I wish - maybe each party would last a week-end at best.
