I took my front wheels off recently and discovered some very disturbing corrosion where the brake discs attach to the hub. It doesn't appear that the corrosion extends into the heart of the hub, but I'm not sure I want to risk it. Has anyone seen this kind of problem before? Should I really be worried?

If it were me I would not drive that car until that hub is replaced. I've seen that type of corrosion totally eat aluminum away.

Those are the worst looking hubs I have ever seen. I would replace them if it were me. If you don't you will most likely be plagued with brake rotor runout. (at the least)

How did that happen in Calif.?
Did you buy the car recently? Was it registered back East maybe? Did a PO park it in the Pacific for a while? Clean the white crud off and start probing into the bosses on the hub - post what you find....

You risk shearing a wheel off... change them.

Those hubs do look bad. I've been looking for a source for new hubs. Anyone know if new hubs are still available?

The new price won't kill you, but I'm sure you can find some S/H jobbies off the board for much better than that.

They do look pretty bad. This car belonged to my father-in-law almost since new. He stopped driving it sometime in the 90's when the windshield seals gave way and started leaking water. He gave it to me after it sat outside for many, many years. This is one of countless items that needed replacing. The car now wears a refurbished, bare-metal resprayed body, fresh interior and is motivated by a strong 3.0 from an SC. I'm hoping that I can find a good set of hubs at parts heaven or someplace. I've just got to resist the "while I'm in there" bug. Could be time for a brake upgrade if I can manage the cost.

"While I'm in there" does not really count when it comes to brakes and -in your case- hubs. I did it all - lines, hoses, calipers, rotors, pads, fluid, hubs and bearings were good= total cost some $600,-
At least I know I can rely on my brakes. I never save a penny on brakes or tires. Frank |
