timing trouble
 

I tried setting my timing yesterday and was able to get 5 deg atdc at 900 RPM but couldn't get the engine even near 30-35 deg btdc at 6000 RPM. It stopped advancing at about 20 deg. I have webers on my 2.4L. The vacuum line was plugged at some point and there is no vacuum source on the carbs. Do I need to have the distributor adjusted for mechanical advance (curve, weights, springs) or is there something I'm missing. I will rebuild the distributor as per previous instructions from another post but I want to know why it won't advance. Even a tired distributor should allow advance, shouldn't it.

Could be....

Did you change the dizzy since the carbs were installed?
Is this a new car for you?
Can you pull the dizzy and read the Bosch part number on the case?
Maybe you can read the number when it's installed with a mirror?
Maybe a new dizzy was installed for the carbs ?
If the part number is 0 231 184 004 you're 1/2 way to a solution?

Not if the weights are rusted or otherwise not able to move their full range.

If you set your initial timing at 5ºBTDC instead of 5ºATDC, that'd be a 10º swing. The 20º you get from the distributor advance gets you to 30º.

Perhaps the 5º you're looking for is hung up on the weight travel as suggested by Zeke.

The 004, '74-'76 2.7 Carrera, RS dizzy is what I run.

10deg BTDC initial = 35 total

works great w/carbs and is the Dizzy PMO used to recommend yrs ago.

I'll try setting 5 deg. btdc and see if that works. The car barely runs now. I got the car in june and have been trying to get it running smoother since then. It also seems to run quite rich.

You're probably on a Windoz machine so I couldn't tell you. However, if you're using a MAC, press the Option key, then the zero key.

Nah Bill, the Alt + xxxx key combinations are how you get some of the uncommon ASCII characters in Windoze. I've found several tables of them on the web, but I only remember a few of them ;)
