901/911 nose cover leak
My '70 gearbox (911) has a leak in the nose cover. See picture. I think this location is related to the reverse gear. Is this a common place for leaks? Other than the annoyance of the leak, is it a problem? Can I seal it from the outside with epoxy, as is the practice on the penetration on the back side of cam covers?

No to the epoxy. The shaft in the center needs to move slightly. This shaft is sealed to the nose cover with a rubber o-ring, Either the o-ring has failed or was forgotten if the transmission was overhauled. Replacing the o-ring is not difficult but the nose cover has to come off to get to it.

Jim, thanks for the reply. Regarding the epoxy/sealant on the outside, I read that the shaft is press fit in place. So I'm thinking that despite the O-ring, it might work to just epoxy the outside because it shouldn't move. Thoughts?
Question: I have another complete nose assembly that I might be able to use. Can I just swap that nose assembly, gears and all? Or do I have to pull the gears or other parts off the original nose to match? Is there anything tricky about this procedure, or does it require special any tools? For me bolting stuff on and off is something that I know I can do. Press fitting stuff inside a transmission is more of an unknown. Thanks, -Juan

I stand corrected; in the 901 the reverse gear idler shaft is secured by thermal shrinking the nose cover (front cover) around it plus it is secured by retaining pin. Your procedure of cleaning up the exterior and applying epoxy resin may work however you may want to determine why the shaft to nose cover joint is leaking? Has the the shaft worked loose and opened up the hole in the cover? Only common tools are required to remove the nose cover but care should be taken to ensure some of the reverse gear components do not fall out when pulling cover off. See replacing 901 sysnchro's project in "101 projects". Cheers, Jim

Jim, Thanks for the help. I'll have a look at 101 projects section. Hopefully I'll have it all back together in a few days! -Juan
