Snell 2005

I've been waiting to buy a helmet for PCA events and have heard that Snell 2005 is coming out. Okay. When? With a little over 2.5 months left they better get on it. Or should I just buy the 2000 series?

Or is it out and I'm the last guy to know....

According to the Snell Foundation site the stickers were available June 30th and the helmets were available on October 1st so you should be able to buy one.

They '05 stickered helmets were supposed to be avaiable 10/1/05. Vendors may not be eager to sell them until the '00s are gone.

Very true. Make sure you request a 2005.

I thought it was ten years, but IKF and SCCA started requiring '00 helmets at the start of 2005 before the '05 helmets were available.

I bought a Snell SA95 helmet in 2000 since I got a good deal on it, then I had to buy a SA00 helmet this year. In their defense the SA95 was getting a little loose and smelly (yes I wash it) after 5 years.

I'm pretty sure each edition is good for 10 years. Some of the less finicky events don't check helmets.

Most people recommend replacing your helmet every 3 to 5 years anyhow though. Just from normal wear and tear, and the inevitable banging around, in transport, and while its on your head. Mine is a SA2000, and will probably get replaced at the end of next year (will be 3 years next june). Its your head...

SA-95 helmets will not be legal for use in SCCA events after 1-1-07. Motorcycle helmets are not legal in SCCA events. Same goes for PCA events and POC events.
Buy a SA-2000 now or SA-2005 helmets when they become available in the next month or so.
All of the reputable racing groups "recommend" replacing any helmet over five years old.
Any group that allows old helmets, motorcycle helmets or doesn't check helmets is a group headed for trouble.

Anyone been following the "story" in one of the bike mags (motorcyclist I think) about snell and their opinion on the safety of Snell certified helmets? I am not really up to speed on the whole story but I belive they basically said that did not know what made a helmet safe. That said I still only buy snell certified helmets.....

Cheers,

Exactly. In ten years, a helmet will look like an antique. If you get the 05, good for you, you got the latest and the greatest. But, don't wait until 2015 to buy a replacement, OK?
