Looking at a 74 RSR tonight

A friend of mine was working on this guys house and found a Porsche in the garage. He claims it's a real 74 euro RSR. He had it restored and claims it's perfect. He needs to sell the car (he's moving) and I'm going to look at it tonight. It has a 3.0 vs the orininal engine. If this car is as nice as he claims, what's it worth? How can I tell if it's a real RSR?

High bid for one at Monterrey this year was $250K. It didn't sell at that price.

I think that this guy probably might have a Euro Carrera, which is probably worth in the 20-30K range with the original engine. I wouldn't pay more than $10-$15K if it doesn't have the original engine. In fact, I wouldn't buy it if it's a Euro Carrera missing the original engine - that's the whole point of those cars.

if it's not MFI , it's definately not RSR, pretty simple to spot...
otherwise, centerlock wheels and 917 brakes...

but like Wayne says , it's unlikely to be a real RSR, those don't sell like this, they get auctioned off for serious money

Yes, with flares about the size of the later turbo.

Hmm, hope it doesn't turn out like the other (admittedly abandoned) car that was publicly announced on Pelican..........early 911 with gas burners.....vanished.

Sometimes publicity isn't a good thing.

That said, good luck - and it'd be cool if it were the real deal!

If it's a real RSR, the owner will know what he has. The VIN will be 9114609XXX. It will have a 3.0 twin plugged (bosch), with HIGH trumpets and either a slide or butterfly admission. Wiiiide fenders, centerlocks, Mg finned brake calipers.
Hard to fake.
I doubt.

That reminds me of a story. In 1978, I saw a ad in the Omaha World Herald, a 68 corvette, big block, etc. I didnt think much about it, but a week later I went to see it. The asking price was $5000.00 When I got there, it was sold, but still in the garage. Looking at the interier, the plate said to : " use 104 octane fuel only", no heater, and large hood buldge. After decoding the numbers, the car was a original L-88 convertible. Hey, I hope your RSR is real, because its a different time, but maybe, just maybe, its real.

Yeah, when I was 13 (1968 I had found a 1955 300SL Gullwing for sale only $8000. Kept begging my dad to buy it, he never went for it. I still remind him of that.

Fifteen years ago, I got a call from a Stranger who was referred to me by someone in the Aston Martin Owner's Club. He had found a "chopped" DB5 in that it had been converted into a station wagon for sale at a consignment lot in Pasadena, CA. It turns out it was one of a handful of factory "Shooting Brakes", custom made by David Brown (then owner of Aston Martin) for his buddies who wanted one for when they went bird hunting. Not my cup of tea, but worth a lot. I was honest, and told him what it was. I think he paid 5 grand. Probably worth an awful lot now.
