Odd pinhole in '70 vintage 901/911 gearboxes

Upon inspecting my '70 901/911 (pull clutch) gearbox, I found an unexpected pin hole in the magnesum case. Look at 11 O'clock at the seat of the pivot bolt in the attached pictures. It's hard to see, but that dark spot is actually a hole, about 1/16" in diameter. I can insert a pin about 3/8" into it. I found the same hole in another 911 gearbox of similar vintage, so it's not a defect.

Does anyone here know if that hole has a purpose? It seems an unusual place for any kind of vent hole. The reason I'm interested is that I would like to seal it off, as my transmission appears to have a leak at the pivot bolt, and I would like to ensure that this hole is not the source.

That's a corrosion hole. Clean it as well as you can, and seal it up with some Dow-Corning RTV730, or some other very high quality sealant.

That's the downside to Magnesium. It corrodes and pits.
