Mike, As we all appreciate your charm, wit and knowledge.... a little more information might be necessary for us to even follow the knowledge that will spew forth from fellow pelicans.

Mike,

That's the Waibel car, right? I recall seeing that car at Pebble in the early '90's, so the restoration can't be all that recent, unless my memory is waay off.

As I recall, Waibel said he built it on a VW chassis with Porsche panels and engine, but other evidence was that it's chassis was 356 based. Don't know that the debate was ever settled, but I thought it was still thought of by most as a "Porsche" (protoype or otherwise) built during the Gmund years regardless.

the nose is a wonderful design study. there were a lot of vw based cars back then.

i like this one the best. a dannenhauer-stauss (sp?) kind of has the same influence as the green one. maybe even the same builder.

The grill with a rear-mounted air-cooled engine and the swoopy rear fender inserts... early bling.

These were popular cars running around Germany in 1953-1959 when my father was there. I have many photos that match up nicely to these.

Thanks for sharing this....

waibel had his own shop- one of the people researching this very green car showed up here about 15 years ago with pics of the car, the shop, etc looking for info on this car. I agree with john walker- its a special bodied vw with the porsche engine (probably started with a vw engine) its been around for quite a while on the west coast.
Do you really think F. Porsche would have put a morris minor grill on one of his cars? since there wasn't any big deal car mfg espionage back then where they camoflauged upcoming models, i really don't think this car was a "porsche" prototype

I don't think anyone has ever claimed that Porsche built it, Dave, so its certainly not a "Porsche" in that sense. That front to rear air induction system probably ensures that...

A little digging turned up this article in Euro Car from a few years ago, which sheds some more light on the history/mystery of the car. According to the article, Porsche apparently believes Waibel built it on an early 356 platform, Waibel said VW.

Looks like Waibel also built the two '48 show cars for Porsche, but those are Porsches. (with no parentheses...)

These are a very unusual variation on the 356. I know of 2 here in Australia, 1 not too far away here in Adelaide under restoration and a completely original car in Canberra. I saw the Canberra car at the Australian 356 Parade a couple of years ago and it looked fantastic. Great thread!!!
