Ignition switch woe's
Ok after spending a couple of hours reading old posts on ignition switch problems got to get some input here,
Problem description: 1979 SC Ignition works fine but, if you turn the key to start the car sometimes it is like it has turned to far or is not coming back into the center position, what happens is that some of the instruments including the speedometer does not work, if you move the key slightly back it pops right on, does not affect the car running or make the starter keep engaging. So is it the electrical part (cheap) that needs replaced or the whole assembly (expensive-o-la) that is bad ??? Forgot to add, the key seems to fit really loosely in the ignition, strange . Todd

bump...I'm not sure. Can you separate the electrical switch from the keyed ignition and turn the electrical part manually? Once you do that, you can see if the electrical switch is working properly or not.
Someone else can probalby shed more light. I did have the two pieces separated on my old '71 tub. I'd guess yours is similar. Doug

It sounds like the electrical portion (which does function mechanically). Eventually, the key may get harder to turn and may even seize up. You probably have a good number of months before this happens, but it's better to replace it now beforehand.

I think all of us will eventually experience a worn out ignition switch. They're not cheap to replace (check with Eugene) and some models are NLA. The topic was addressed in this recent thread.

odds are it's the electrical part. you still need to take the whole unit out unless you can figure out how to get the top screw out, and then in again.

Hey Eugene -
I took a look at the catalog and found part number M-613-012-00 (OEM: 964-613-012-00) which is the electrical part of the ignition, is this the one I need to fix my situation ? It is $53.00 right now. How do you use the same key for this part as the one you have now ? Thanks, Todd
