Hey guys,

Now that you've given us the eBay #, how do we find this on eBay? All I get is a way to navigate through the thousand cars until I find this number.

Is there a place where one can type the number, and have it posted?

Thanks.

Hi Stef,

Right you are!

In the past I had tried to type in "Item #XXXXXXXX", and it told me there was no such thing.

Now that I type in only the item number, no text and no # character, it comes up beautifully.

Thanks..........Andras

Hey Jorian - you looking for a 996 now? I'd go to either Weissach or SCAN for a PPI. Funny thing is I'm kicking the idea around more and more lately. A coupe though. Sport springs, tear out some interior pieces, sport exhaust, lose the UGLY twist wheels. They can be really sharp when the right mods are made. The drive real fine too apparantly.

But...You know the M96 motor has got 2.7 curse right? I would assume they got a bit more reliable after the displacement (and minor styling) change in '02, but for serious track work I understand there's a finite risk of motor destruction from oil starvation. The head gaskets also fail occasionally, which can cause water in the cylinders and hydrolok induced cylinder wall failures, then there's the rear main seal problems, and porous cases weeping oil. The last two problems should be easy to spot on a car with even a little bit of mileage, and there is an oiling kit available if you want to track the car. It's the head gasket failures that will get you....although there *must* be a fix for that by now I'd think.

Last note...Peter F bought a 1999 model back in 1999, first guy on the block. Not a hint of trouble with the car ever - he loves it.

Anyway - I get to drive anything you're looking at or buying right?

I've driven with Peter a couple of times and he absolutely drives the tires off that car on the track. Awesome.

Dude - I just read the full story on that RMS problem with the M96 engines. There are a lot of bad motors out there, and they can't be fixed. Replacement is the only option. The problem is how the crank is centred in the case. In the bad engines, the crank is off centre. A new RMS is just a temporary fix. The good news is that if a car has had the engine replaced, then you're 99.9% assured the problem is fixed since Porsche is aware of the problem. Long story short - check out any car you are going to buy very carefully and check the service records.

Is there an official link somewhere?

I think that the engine problems with the 996 may be exaggerated by the Internet. Yes, there are problems. How many? Who knows. People who have engines blow tend to talk about them. People who have nothing happen, tend to say, well, nothing...

Porsche, as far as I know, has not had to replace a lot of these engines - only a handful here and there. No, that's not ideal, but I have to think the news would be much worse if everyone was having massive problems...

I haven't seen any "official" stats, but I have looked at the used 996 listings. The percentage of cars with replaced engines is staggeringly high for cars that are at most 6 years old.

It is likely that owners who've had the engine replaced are more likely to sell them, before it happens again. And the ones without problems are keeping them. Therefor simply reviewing the classifieds may exaggerate the problem, but it is a very real problem.

I was pointed to the PCA website where their 964/993/996 tech guy has a number of respones to questions which deal with the subject. No statistics are given. When I said I got the full story I meant I now understand the root cause of these RMS failures. It's not an easy fix, and arguably there is no fix (if your engine is so afflicted).

The good nes is that of your engine is not afflicted, then there is no problem an done will ikely not develop. It's a go-no go thing.

OMG, two dyed in the wool hardcore aircooled 911 guys (Jorian and Jasper) contemplating the purchase of a 996! Just kidding. Lots of good buys locally on the 996 for you Jorian. Spend that 996 money on an RS replica........you know, the car you actually want!!!

Cheers

996

Jasper, CATCA, MOTION - keep yer shorts on. I am looking into this car for a friend who is a non P-car guy. Although I am a HC aircooled guy and will likely always have one I do appreciate the water cars too. Just not this one. Especially with the foo foo interior wood accents.

So back to my original question. Whats' a good price and where can it get a PPI done in the area?

Phew - I just said I was thinking about a 996 so Jorian didn't feel like too much of a dork! Glad that's settled.

$50K for a nice 2002 car would be a good deal Jorian. I'd imagine an early 996 could go as low as $35K by now (CANADIAN DOLLARS GUYS!)

As far as a PPI goes - Weissach knows these cars inside out and they're club supporters so that would honestly be my first choice. A close second would be Andy Haglund at SCAN.

I still want to drive it Jorian so if you're out test driving one for your "friend" then come and test it over here on the shore.

cheers

jasper

Car is in Halifax, Pennsylvania so it would be good to get a PPI done there.
