80 SC paint material question??
 

on an 80 SC original guards red. Is it acrylic enamel. Laquer or single stage urethane. ???? Need to know before I paint over asap

I don't know what the paint was on my 81SC but that was tough paint. I would guess single stage urathane. Really good quality paint.

Knowing that, I wouldn't of stripped my car bare. I would have scuffed it and shot it.

So are we 100% its enamel now or is that just wording for the brochure?

I have no other knowledge that it's enamel other than that brochure.
Maybe some of the painters here could confirm or get another
source to be sure.

If it origanal paint it is a very good base to paint over. You can tell if it is single stage or base/clear by rubbing it with rubbing compound or cleaner,if you get color on the rag it is single stage,no color,base/clear.

The Glassurit paint of the period ( or Glasso, as it was known then) was acrylic enamel and it was some good paint to work with. I still use acrylic enamel whenever I paint if I can get it. 6 coats (really 3 double coats, the last 2 laid down as wet as you can) and you have a great paint job. The last time I used this material was 2 years ago on my truck. I've never bothered to even wax it and the truck is never garaged. The paint looks great to this day.

Almost all acrylic enamels are outlawed in CA now. Too bad, I think it's the best paint ever invented.

Milt is correct, it was baked on acrylic enamel which we can still get here in Missouri.
