Project 993.. part 3

Ok, made some more progress this week. Got the entire front end panels off and got all the interior carpet pads/glue out. THAT was a major P.I.T.A..

I also got 30 pounds of old cell phone/gps crud the PO had installed.

I got all the new rear carpets and seats put in, but forgot to take a photo of it. The photo below was taken before i ripped it out.

Its coming along nicely...

While it's all open, can you check to see where the best place is to run a pair of wires through the firewall or shelf into the right side of the engine compartment for a high mounted brake light?

rattlsnak 10-17-2005 01:36 PM

Bill, are you wanting to run wires from the engine compartment into the inside of the car for the newer style brake light? Isnt brake light wiring for the basket handle brakelight under the decklid? I realize it comes from inside at one point, but i dont know where it passes through to the rear lights.

Bill Verburg 10-17-2005 01:51 PM

Yes, there are existing wires for the high mounted light but there have been a number of issues relating to their use. I can get the wire from the outside through and around the gasket at the top of the widow, runnning along the right side of the window on the passenger side, but then it needs to get to the passendger side hinge area in the engine compartment. I haven't been able to get a close look because of the rollbar in my car. It will have to come out to do the install, but I would like some idea in advance of where to go through the firewall

Bill, are you wanting to remove the basket handle and still have a 3rd brakelight required in NY state? I'm just curious as to your motivations...

You know the big DME harness that runs through the body on the drivers side? There is one exactly like it on the passenger side. In my picture, you cant see it, but it is right beneath the topmost section of padding. You should have no issues running it through that grommet. Youll have to pull the rear tray, rear seat and side bolster off.

Yes, I am swapping the powered tail for a fixed RS one

Thanks , that's what I was hoping for, when you say "right beneath the topmost section of padding" could you be a little more specific? I have the side padding out and have loosened up the rear /speaker piece, but haven't been able to remove it because the roll bar is in the way so I can't see under or behind it.

Bill, if you look at the photo, on the left hand side, the top most padding you see where the rear seat back goes. It kinda goes up like a triangle. Right below that, under the padding is a big harness that runs through the body just like on the drivers side.

If you look at the sheet metal on the upright portion, basically where the upper seat back goes, you can see a silver dollar sized indentation, it is about 3 inches right below that under the padding.

And i can tell you it is a glued up mess. I can photoshop a picture when i get back in town if that still doesnt make sense.

Do any of these point in the general area?

Bill, the factory wiring harness passes through the firewall directly to the left of the 1 in your picture. The grommet is still covered by the padding in that view. If you remove your airbox and look back to where the rear shock mounts you can see the backside of this big black grommet directly behind.

If you need pics I should be able to take some this week.

rattlsnak - I found a few misc interior pieces and also the fender liners that go behind the front tires.

Thanks that helps to narrow it down :)

Any new updates? I love reading this. I need to make it a point to check the car out first hand.
